The New York Red Bulls, wearing black armbands to honor the victims of Monday's Boston Marathon bombings, beat the New England Revolution, 4-1, on Saturday. Dax McCarty, Fabian Espindola, Thierry Henry and Jonny Steele scored for the hosts.
Three goals came in the first 10 minutes. Dax McCarty scored in the fourth minute. New York worked the ball around after a corner. Tim Cahill passed a hard ball to McCarty, who took a quick snap-shot from the top of the box that beat Bobby Shuttleworth at the near post.
In the very next attack, the Revs equalized. Lee Nguyen took a deep free kick that A.J. Soares nodded down. The ball deflected off Brandon Barklage and into the goal.
Barklage made amends two minutes later by assisting the winner. The defender pumped the ball upfield from his own half and Fabian Espindola latched onto it. Espindola cut inside Soares and drilled a low hard shot past Shuttleworth.
Thierry Henry made sure of the result in the final 10 minutes. Off a quick counter, Jonny Steele fed the ball in behind the Revs back line. Henry peeled off the flank, surged into the box and curled the ball around the goalkeeper.
Steele himself got in on the action with stoppage time looming. On another counterattack, Eric Alexander drove down the right and centered in front of goal. Steele tapped it in at the far post to complete the rout.
