New York Knicks Have One Final Move in Free Agency: A Fan’s Take

The New York Knicks have made several moves during the 2012 NBA free agency period. They have aggressively pursued new players and retained current ones. Everything has fallen into place. But they have one final move to make: sign guard Randy Foye.

Okay, maybe they have two moves left.

On July 05, 2012, the Houston Rockets and Jeremy Lin agreed to a four-year deal worth $28.9 million. The Knicks can match that offer on Wednesday July 11. Sources are saying that the Knicks will bring Lin back. But nothing is definite yet.

Lin is the final target for the Knicks this summer. After a spectacular first season in New York, Lin became the future point guard for the Knicks. He captured the NBA and the world with stunning performances. Lin will be returning to a familiar and upgraded roster.

In a surprising move, veteran point guard Jason Kidd agreed to join the Knicks. Kidd will be a great backup and mentor for Lin. His experience and leadership will stabilize the Knicks offense.

The Knicks acquired center Marcus Camby in a sign-and-trade deal with the Rockets. Camby adds depth, defense and rebounding to the bench. Camby and center Tyson Chandler will make a very strong defensive tandem for the Knicks.

The Knicks re-signed three-point sharpshooter Steve Novak to a four-year deal worth $15 million. Novak led the NBA in three-point shooting last season. Novak and Lin played well together and flourished with the Knicks last season.

Guard J.R. Smith will also re-sign with the Knicks. Smith will start at shooting guard in the absence of Landry Fields.

The Knicks could still re-sign forward Jared Jeffries. And of course Foye could add depth at guard, until Iman Shumpert is healthy.

The Knicks have been very busy this offseason. Now most of the pieces are in place. But the Knicks have left the best move for last. They must match the offer and make Lin a Knick on Wednesday. Then they will have done everything possible to improve the team. And the Knicks will have a very solid roster from the start of training camp.
