New York Giants: Five Players Who Are Struggling Through Preseason Week 2

Yahoo Contributor Network

COMMENTARY | Two preseason games are in the books for the New York Giants. They defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 18-13 and lost to the Indianapolis Colts 20-12.

Beyond the results, several Giants have struggled through the team's first two exhibition games. Thus, they've put themselves in danger of losing a starting job or roster spot -- and you thought preseason games didn't matter.

Here are five Giants who are having a difficult time through the second week of the preseason. Keep in mind, the Jints will be making cuts soon, as teams around the National Football League trim rosters to 53 players by the end of the month.

DT Marvin Austin -- Austin, the team's second-round pick in 2011, has been virtually invisible through the first two games of the preseason. He didn't register a single tackle against the Steelers despite playing the most snaps of any defender, and he had one assisted tackle against the Colts. The Giants have depth and experience at defensive tackle, so the oft-injured Austin is running out of time.

RT/LG David Diehl -- Diehl was horrible against the Colts. He missed at least three blocks, one of which led to a sack of Eli Manning. Maybe it had something to do with his injured hand. As it turns out, Diehl needs thumb surgery and is expected to miss six weeks. Consequently, rookie Justin Pugh will be inserted into the starting lineup. You have to wonder if the move will be permanent.

RB Da'Rel Scott -- Scott has speed to burn, but we haven't seen much of it through the first couple of games of the preseason. The third-year pro carried the ball 10 times for a meager 12 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers and sat out against the Colts. The emergence of Michael Cox, as I detailed in my "five players on the rise" article, underscores the need for Scott to step up his game.

RB Ryan Torain -- Like Scott, backup running back Torian hasn't done much, plus he's missed time with a concussion. He rushed for 19 yards on five carries against the Colts in his only action of the preseason. However, the Giants are bound to keep at least three running backs, including starters Andre Brown and David Wilson, so Torian's not done yet. He just has a long way to go.

CB Terrell Thomas -- Thomas, who led the team in tackles and passes defended in 2010, started training camp on the physically unable to perform list and hasn't played in a game. However, the experienced defensive back has returned to the practice field and should take the field this weekend. Thomas' attempted comeback from a third ACL injury is an inspirational story, but he must show the team something before the season starts. Listed as a cornerback, he should see time at safety.
