Video: Political moments of 2012

ABC News (OLD)

Fromfoot-in-mouth moments on the campaign trail to the historical happenings at theSupreme Court, it has been a year of triumphs and follies in the world ofpolitics. But before we bid adieu to 2012 and forge ahead into the New Year, here's a toast to the year's top political plays and bloopers.

There weremoments worthy of the history books that will continue to affectpolitics well into next year. The Supreme Court upheld the president's healthcare law; Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed inLibya; and President Obama won reelection, solidifying his place inhistory as the country's first black president.

There wasno shortage of missteps that the politicians who made them wish we would allforget. Sooner or later, we probably will. … Well, maybe! Mitt Romney might nothave meant to say he likes firing people, and President Obama might not haveintended to tell small business owners they didn't build their companies; butthey said it, and we can't help but hit the replay button.

Of course,at the center of this year's political universe was the presidential campaign. The Republican primary came to a close, taking with it Newt Gingrich's dreamsfor a moon colony and Rick Santorum's sweater vests. Sigh. And feathers flew inthe general election as Mitt Romney and President Obama took to the street - -SesameStreet, that is -- to fight over a big yellow bird. It becamepart of the larger political battle over the country's economic future thatdefined the campaign.
