Yankees' Youkilis to miss 10-12 weeks

The SportsXchange

New York Yankees infielder Kevin Youkilis is scheduled for back surgery to repair a herniated disk on Thursday that will keep him off the field for 10 to 12 weeks, the team announced Tuesday.

Back issues have plagued Youkilis, 34, the past few seasons. He was on the disabled list and missed a month earlier this year before he returned and reinjured the back while making a defensive play at first base last week.

Youkilis is hitting .219 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 34 games this season. He batted .146 in 11 games after he returned from his monthlong stint on the DL.

The longtime Boston Red Sox player is in his first season with the Yankees after signing a one-year, $12 million contract in the offseason. Youkilis was expected to fill Alex Rodriguez's spot at third base until Rodriguez returned from hip surgery, but Youkilis' injury will force the Yankees to use David Adams, Reid Brignac and Jayson Nix at the position.

Youkilis was the second prominent Yankee to be placed on the DL. First baseman Mark Reixeira went back on the injured list on Tuesday with a recurrence of his wrist problem.
