Yankees want Girardi back as manager
New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman wants Joe Girardi to return as the team's manager next season.
Cashman, in his end-of-season press conference Tuesday, made it clear he wants Girardi back. "We have an interest in clearly trying to keep him," Cashman said. "I think he likes it here. We're going to give him a real good reason to stay."
Girardi was hired after the 2007 season, and his contract expires at the end of October. Injuries hurt the Yankees this season, and the Yankees had their poorest record since 1992, finishing tied for third in the AL East at 85-77.
''He knows we'd like to have him stay and continue as manager of the New York Yankees as we move forward," Cashman said.
Cashman said he met with Girardi on Monday to discuss things, and will meet with agent Steve Mandell on Wednesday to continue talks further. "After tomorrow, I think I'll get a real good feel for where we're at," Cashman said.
Girardi, 48, has already said he wants to return to the team next year. He also said he needs to talk to his family before making any final decisions. Girardi grew up in Chicago but downplayed his connections to the city recently.
