Yankees place Sabathia on 15-day DL

The New York Yankees placed left-hander CC Sabathia on the 15-day disabled list with right knee inflammation, the team announced Sunday.

Sabathia underwent an MRI on his knee Sunday morning. It is the same knee which was operated on for a torn meniscus following the 2010 season.

Manager Joe Girardi said the test showed no structural damage but did show some fluid in the knee.

"As of right now there's no meniscal tears. He's just got some fluid and he needs a little time off," said Girardi, who added he assumed the knee would be drained.

The 33-year-old Sabathia has struggled through his first eight starts this season with a 3-4 record and 5.28 ERA over 46 innings.

The Milwaukee Brewers hit three home runs off Sabathia in Saturday's 5-4 win over the Yankees.

"After the game last night, CC complained that his knee was hurting; his landing knee, his right knee," Girardi said. "He hadn't mentioned anything to us before that. He said a few previous starts, he would feel it on one pitch, but it was something that he's dealt with for a while, so he didn't have a need to say anything to us. Yesterday it got bad and it swelled up after the game, so he had an MRI."

The Yankees also recalled right-hander Matt Daley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Daley has already been up with the club this season, posting a 27.00 ERA in 1 1/3 innings.
