Yankees' Nix break hand

The SportsXchange

Jayson Nix, a valuable infield reserve for the New York Yankees, broke his left hand when he was hit by a pitch Wednesday.

A second-inning knuckleball thrown by Toronto Blue Jays right-hander R.A. Dickey caught Nix on the top of his hand. Nix left the game for pinch runner Mark Reynolds, and an X-ray found a fracture.

The timetable for Nix's absence wasn't immediately known.

With third baseman Alex Rodriguez and shortstop Derek Jeter missing the majority of the season due to injuries, Nix has seen extensive playing time at both positions. In 87 games (74 starts), Nix is batting .236 with a .306 on-base percentage, a .311 slugging percentage, three homers and 24 RBIs.

Nix was playing third base Wednesday with Rodriguez out of the starting lineup.
