Yankees' Jeter says he'll return in 2013

The SportsXchange

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter doesn't want to set a timeline for his return from an ankle injury, but he vowed Thursday that he will be back on the field in 2013.

"I have no doubt I'll be back," said Jeter, who had a setback in his surgically-repaired ankle last week. "When you have doubt that's when you're in trouble. I've been told this is going to heal and when it heals I'll be ready to go. It's frustrating that I can't magically make it heal sooner than it's taking but I have no doubt in my mind."

Jeter, 38, originally dislocated the ankle last October during the American League Championship Series. He underwent surgery a week later, and he and the Yankees targeted Opening Day as a possible return date.

Jeter attempted to slowly make his way back into the lineup during Spring Training, but was shut down two weeks in.

"I don't (regret it)," Jeter said of placing a timeline on his return. "My job is to be ready for opening day and I feel like I didn't do my job. My job was to be ready. Unfortunately I wasn't but I don't regret it because I think you have to set goals."

The Yankees were 11-9 without Jeter entering Thursday's game against Toronto. Jeter is coming off a highly productive season in which he hit .316 with 15 home runs, 58 RBI and 99 runs scored in 159 games.

"Our hope is that he'll just pick up where he left off last year," Girardi said. "Once we get this all healed, I don't think any of us are going to know until we get to that point. We were under the impression that he would heal up and play shortstop for us. He's had a setback here that we have to deal with but hopefully we get him back and he's the same player he was at the end of last year.
