Yankees claim Herndon, Spence off waivers

The SportsXchange

For a pitcher who is likely to miss the start of the season following elbow surgery, David Herndon is having a very busy offseason.

Herndon changed teams Tuesday for the second time in three weeks, as the New York Yankees claimed him off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto had claimed Herndon off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies last month.

Herndon, 27, appeared in only five games in 2012 and underwent Tommy John surgery in June.

In 97 relief outings for the Phillies over the past three years, Herndon has a 2-8 record with one save and a 3.85 ERA.

The Yankees made another acquisition Tuesday, picking up left-hander Josh Spence off waivers from the San Diego Padres.

Spence, 24, went 0-1 with a 4.35 ERA in 11 relief appearances for San Diego this year.
