Yankees acquire SS Ryan from Mariners

The SportsXchange

In a move that seems to be a response to Derek Jeter's uncertain status, the New York Yankees acquired shortstop Brendan Ryan from the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday for a player to be named later.

Ryan is hitting .194 and had played in only one of the Mariners' past 13 games, but he is an excellent defensive shortstop.

Because the trade happened after August 31, Ryan will not be eligible for New York's postseason roster.

But the Yankees need help at shortstop now.

Jeter has not appeared in a game since Saturday because of a sore ankle, and he did not engage in any pregame drills on Tuesday, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

Team officials refuse to acknowledge that Jeter might be finished for the season, but they don't know when he will return.

"It's just hard," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday, according to Hardball Talk. "Because we want him to feel good about going out there and not having some pain, and being able to move the way we need him to move, and the way he wants to move. But we just don't feel like he's at that point. ... My hope is we're going to get him back. But I don't know for sure."

Eduardo Nunez is the Yankees' shortstop in Jeter's absence.
