There are not many events in American sports that can match the history of the World Series, which has been taking place since 1903. For the most part, not much has changed over the past 100 years and that adds to the aura around the series that decides the champion of Major League Baseball.

As we charge toward the 2012 edition of the Fall Classic, scheduled to get start Wednesday, October 24, here is a look at the historical winners throughout the history of the event:
