The Women's SATA Airlines Azores Pro finally got underway on Saturday, September 29, 2012 in the Azores Islands. Mother Nature was obviously in a much better mood than she was the first two days of the surfing competition. She greeted the surfers with onshore winds, clear skies and waves in the two to three foot range. Here's a look at some of the early results:
Round 48 Results
The Women's SATA Airlines Azores Pro kicked off with a surf heat between Bianca Buitendag (ZAF), Minami Takechi (JPN), Skye Burgess (AUS) and Anali Gomez (PER). Bianca Buitendag was obviously a woman on a mission. She managed to deliver a 9.50 point ride. It was the best one of the round. She won the surf heat with 16.75 points. It also turned out to be the highest surf heat score of the round.
The 2nd highest surf heat score of Round 48 went to Pauline Ado (FRA) during her Heat 8 matchup against Maud Le Car (FRA) and Ellie-Jean Coffey (AUS). Her best wave was an 8.50 point ride. She won the surf heat with 14.75 points.
The 3rd highest surf heat score of the round went to Rebecca Woods (AUS) during her Heat 9 matchup against Cannelle Bulard (REU) and Nicola Atherton (AUS). Rebecca Woods won the surf heat with 12 points. Her best wave was a 7.50 point ride.
Round 24 Results
Round 24 opened up with a surf heat between Bianca Buitendag (ZAF), Mikaela Greene (AUS), Nikki Van Dijik (AUS) and Nao Omura (JPN). Bianca Buitendag won the surf heat with 14.66 points. I thought that given the size of the waves on offer, she managed to display a lot of skill.
Heat 2 featured surfers Alizee Arnaud (FRA), Freya Prumm (AUS), Anali Gomez (PER) and Philippa Anderson (AUS). Philippa Anderson started out strong by posting a 6.33 point ride. Anali Gomez answered back by catching a decent size wave. She utilized it to fire off three solid turns off of the top. It garnered her 7.50 points and knocked Anderson out of the lead. In the end, Anali Gomez won the surf heat with 12.50 points. She is expected to surf again in Round 12, Heat 1 against Bianca Buitendag (ZAF).
Heat 3 featured surfers Justine Dupont (FRA), Alessa Quizon (HAW), Georgia Fish (AUS) and Maud Le Car (FRA). By the time the surf heat started, there was not much swell on offer. As such, the women were not able to produce a lot of high scoring rides. Justine Dupont ultimately won the surf heat with 11.30 points. Her best waves were a 6.83 point ride and a 4.47 point ride.
The SATA Airlines Azores Pro's Round 24 is expected to continue this afternoon. The surfing competition's waiting period ends on Sunday, September 30, 2012. Surf fans will be able to watch the remaining women's surf heats via the SATA Airlines Azores Pro's website.
