Wolves 2, Rampage 1
SAN ANTONIO -- The Chicago Wolves kicked off their 20th American Hockey League season in style Friday night, receiving impressive performances from new faces in a 2-1 win over the San Antonio Rampage at the AT&T Center.
In Chicago's first game as the affiliate of the St. Louis Blues, it was top goaltending prospect Jake Allen (1-0-0) who shined. The netminder turned away 41 of 42 shots for the win and made a handful of big saves during San Antonio's seven power plays.
Breaking open the scoring for Chicago (1-0-0-0) just over three minutes into the game was former AHL MVP Corey Locke. Forward Mike Davies settled a puck and fed it to Locke, who buried it behind Rampage goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris (0-1-0).
Rookie winger Dmitrij Jaskin tallied his first AHL goal 45 seconds into the second period. Catching the puck off the boards, the winger corralled it and beat Grumet-Morris, who made 21 saves in the loss.
San Antonio (0-1-0-0) tallied their lone goal with 10 minutes left in the game. Defenseman Colby Robak let loose a shot nine seconds into a Rampage power play that careened off the post and past a screened Allen.
The Wolves' season brings with it a blend of new and old as the team welcomed back a familiar face in coach John Anderson. Returning after a four-year coaching stint in the NHL, Anderson racked up four championships and 10 postseason appearances in eleven previous seasons coaching Chicago.
