Tight end Jason Witten hasn't been cleared to return to the field and appears unlikely to play in the Cowboys' regular-season opener against the Giants. Witten avoided surgery and was told his spleen will heal on its own, but ESPN reported that doctors have yet to clear him and Witten's chances ofplaying Wednesday are "not good." Witten suffered a lacerated spleen and internal bleeding in a Monday night preseason game against Oakland. If he sits out against the Giants, the Cowboys then have 11 games before their Week 2 game at Seattle. Witten has been the model of resiliency for the Cowboys, missing only one game in his 10-year career. That came in 2003 when he sustained a broken jaw. With Witten out, fourth-year pro John Phillips figures more prominently.
