Florida Atlantic's special teams coach and a witness signed documents on Friday stating that they saw former Owls coach Carl Pelini and defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis using drugs.

In the notarized affidavit obtained by WPTV.com, FAU assistant Matt Stewart and a woman, Allison Stewart, said they witnessed Pelini smoking marijuana in Key West, Fla., on Oct. 19. They also alleged that they saw both Pelini and Rekstis use marijuana and cocaine within the past year.

Stewart went on to state that she personally received a text message from Pelini "admitting that he uses drugs on occasion."

Pelini and Rekstis resigned on Wednesday because of what the university called illegal drug use. In a statement issued through athletic director Pat Chun after the resignations, Pelini apologized for his poor judgment.

Pelini was in his second season at Florida Atlantic and had a 5-15 record. He left his brother Bo Pelini's staff at Nebraska after the 2011 season for FAU.

Offensive coordinator Brian Wright has taken over as FAU's interim coach and linebackers coach Jevan DeWitt as defensive coordinator.

The Owls (2-6) play host to Tulane on Saturday.
