Wisconsin fires offensive line coach

The SportsXchange

Wisconsin Badgers offensive line coach Mike Markuson is out after two games.

"As of today, officially, we've moved on in a transition at the offensive line position," coach Bret Bielema said.

Badgers' offensive quality control coordinator Bart Miller is expected to serve as Markuson's replacement.

Wisconsin made a change after the Badgers recorded just 35 rushing yards in Saturday's 10-7 loss at Oregon State. The Badgers were one of four teams to drop out of the AP's Top 25 poll Sunday.

Players and coaches said communication issues were part of the issue. Wisconsin lost multiple key starters, including Kevin Zeitler and Peter Konz, as well as offensive line coach Bob Bostad, who was at UW from 2006 through 2011. Markuson came highly recommended because of his experience in the SEC. Bielema said he was even more coveted because of his Midwestern roots. Markuson is from Minnesota.

But early season issues, including 2 of 14 on third down at Oregon State, made it clear things weren't the same for the Badgers up front.

Wisconsin has back-to-back seasons with at least 3,000 rushing yards but enters Saturday with 267 yards on 70 carries.

The Badgers rank 103rd nationally in rushing after two games, after finishing 11th last year.
