Wimbledon: BBC Opening-Day Coverage Peaks With 2.2 Million Viewers

LONDON &ndash The BBC's coverage of the opening day of the Wimbledon tennis tournament here drew a smaller peak audience than last year.


> According to overnight data from ratings consultancy Attentional, an average of 1.5 million people watched BBC Two's coverage on Monday. That amounted to a share of 18.4 percent of people viewing TV in Britain during the period starting around 1:45 p.m and going into the evening.

> As expected, the audience peak of 2.2 million, or a share of 35.6 percent, came during Scottish star ‪Andy‬ ‪Murray‬'s first match of this year's tournament after his Wimbledon victory last year. He beat Belgium's David Goffin.


> On the opening day of Wimbledon 2013, the BBC drew a peak audience of 3.9 million during Murray's match.


> The BBC will offer 150 hours of live TV coverage of Wimbledon and up to 12 live streams accessible across digital devices, up from 10 last year.

> The BBC's team of commentators and analysts includes retired women's champion Marion Bartoli, injured British number one Laura Robson, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, Tracy Austin, Pat Cash, Lindsay Davenport and others.


> The BBC last year drew the biggest British TV audience for any Wimbledon final in more than 20 years. Overall, the match, in which Murray defeated Novak Djokovic, came in with the second-highest peak rating ever for Wimbledon coverage on the BBC, with 17.29 million people. The average audience amounted to 12.1 million.
