Williams in talks to become college coach
University of the Incarnate Word head football coach Larry Kennan has been in conversation with former University of Texas and NFL running back Ricky Williams about an assistant coaching position on his staff, according to a school release.
"Ricky reached out to me about getting into coaching," Kennan said in the release. "We have an opening and he is looking to get into coaching so I think it is a good fit. His experience will be a big help to our staff and players and I think he will have a positive effect on our recruiting efforts."
Williams retired from the NFL after the 2011 season with over 10,000 career rushing yards and over 2,500 receiving yards. At the University of Texas, he was the 1998 Heisman Trophy winner.
The University of the Incarnate Word recently made the leap to NCAA Football Championship Subdivision and will compete in the Southland Conference this season.
"We knew that the move to Division I would increase the talent pool of candidates for staffing positions as they came available," UIW Athletic Director Mark Papich said in the release. "When coach Kennan approached me regarding Ricky as a potential addition to our staff, it reinforced what we already believed to be true. The potential to bring someone with the athletic experience of Ricky Williams to work with our student-athletes will enhance their exposure to elite level football."
