On Friday, October 19, 2012, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins played an away game against the Springfield Falcons. The Penguins had lost the first game of the season which had been against the Binghamton Senators. Though the team had yet to play a home game, it was a disappointing start to the season. Players and fans were likely hoping that this game would be the first win of the season for the team. Unfortunately, this was not the first win of the season. The Falcons took the victory by a score of 3-1. The Falcons remained undefeated and the Penguins remained winless.

The game got off to a bad start for the Penguins. The Falcons got out to an early lead thanks to a goal by Jonathan Audy-Marchessault. David Savard and Ryan Johansen were credited with assists. As time began to wind down in the first, the Falcons extended their lead with a goal from John Moore. Matt Calvert and Nick Drazenovic were credited with assists. By the end of the first period, the Falcons had the lead by a score of 2-0. The second period was a defensive period and neither team managed to get a goal. In the third, both teams scored. Thanks to a power play, the Penguins got two goals within two minutes early in the third. Joe Marrow got the first goal of the night for the Penguins. Benn Ferriero and Trevor Smith were credited with assists. Philippe Dupuis got the team's second goal of the night and both Beau Bennett and Brian Dumoulin got the assist. The teams were now tied 2-2. Unfortunately, the score didn't last long. Cam Atkinson put the Falcons back on top thanks to Audy-Marchessault, who was credited with the assist. Johansen got the final score of the night for the Falcons and both Audy-Marchessault and Atkinson were credited with the assist. The Falcons won the game by a score of 4-2.

Last season, the Penguins were one of the top teams in the AHL. The team finished in second in the East Division of the Eastern Conference and defeated the Hershey Bears in the first round of the playoffs. The team lost in the second round of the playoffs to the St. John's IceCaps. Though it was a disappointing ending to the season, the team still had a great run in the playoffs and a great season overall. It had likely been hoped by fans that the team's success in the 2011-2012 season would mean that the 2012-2013 season would be a great one too. Unfortunately, so far the team has failed to live up to expectations. However, there is still almost an entire season to play and there is every chance that the team will be able to pull things together.
