The SportsXchange

Minnesota Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom was scratched from Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals against the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday after injuring himself during pregame warmup.

Backstrom appeared fine during the morning skate but was reportedly injured minutes before the game while reaching for a rebound. He had to be helped off the ice.

Backup goalie Josh Harding made the start in net for the Wild. In five starts this season, Harding went 1-1-0 with a 3.24 goals-against average and .863 save percentage. Harding was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis last year and missed most of this season dealing with complications with his medication.

Backstrom went 24-15-3 in 42 games for Minnesota with a 2.48 goals-against average and .909 save percentage. He had made 11 playoff appearances in his career; Harding had only one appearance entering Tuesday's game.
