No. 16 Wichita State overcame a sluggish first half to race past William & Mary 79-62 in the first game of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic on Thursday night in Wichita, Kan.

The visiting Tribe jumped out to a 13-3 lead and never trailed in the first half, but a 5-0 run in the final minute of the half brought the Shockers to within 39-38 at halftime.

Wichita State took the lead on a Kadeem Coleby dunk 2:12 into the second half.

After a Kyle Gaillard layup gave William & Mary the lead for the final time at 41-40, Wichita State (3-0) went on a 13-2 run to take control. A 10-1 run to close the game left the final margin more lopsided than the play on the court would indicate.

Four Wichita State players scored in double figures, led by Fred VanVleet with 18 points. Cleanthony Early just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Marcus Thornton scored 18 points to lead William & Mary (1-2), which hurt itself with 14 turnovers and 11-of-22 free throw shooting.

Wichita State plays Tennessee State on Saturday in the second game of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic and William & Mary takes on High Point on Wednesday.
