COMMENTARY | With New York City being home to eight major sports teams, the competition for the back pages of the local newspapers is fierce and never-ending. Just as intense is the competition for the hearts and minds of fans in this sports-crazed town. Yet, over the years, the New York Giants have managed to remain on top of the heap in the city that never sleeps. Here are five reasons why the Big Apple belongs to Big Blue.
Eli Manning is the Man -- With all due respect to New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, Eli Manning is the most popular athlete in New York City. With a pair of Super Bowl MVPs under his belt and a reputation for performing in the clutch, no other sports figure in the Big Apple has accomplished more over the last few years. Manning is the perfect face for the storied franchise.
Blue Collar Football -- The Giants traditionally have been a defensive-minded, smash-mouth football team, endearing them to the blue collar sports fans of the Big Apple. New Yorkers appreciate hard-working, no-nonsense teams because that's how they see themselves, which is why the Giants have one of the most loyal fanbases in the business. Try getting season tickets, if you don't believe me.
Green With Envy -- Soon after being named head coach of the New York Jets, Rex Ryan planned a football takeover of New York. But it's going to be a long time before Gang Green runs this town. Let's just say the Giants have won four Super Bowls since the Jets last lifted what's now known as the Vince Lombardi Trophy in 1969. Incidentally, Lombardi began his professional coaching career as an assistant with the Giants.
Steeped in Tradition -- The Giants have been around since 1925. That's longer than any pro sports team in New York other than the Yankees. Thus, generations of football fans have grown up watching the Giants and legendary players such as Y.A. Tittle, Fran Tarkenton and Lawrence Taylor. Furthermore, the G-Men have called iconic ballparks such as the Polo Grounds and Yankee Stadium home. With such a rich history, the Giants don't have to take a back seat to any team in any sport.
New York Loves A Winner -- The Giants, who won Super Bowl XLVI in 2012, are the last major New York sports team to win a championship. Furthermore, the G-Men have won four Super Bowls overall, making them one of the most successful teams on the New York sports scene. There's nothing like winning in New York, and there's nothing New Yorkers love more than a winning sports team.
