Why the Redskins will LOVE Matt Ioannidis

I’ve written a lot these past few weeks about the types of players Redskins General Manager Scot McCloughan likes. Fifth round pick Matt Ioannidis is one of those guys, and he is a player the team is expecting a lot from in 2016 and beyond.

First, he’s showing himself a guy who can play anywhere on the defensive line, depending on wherever they need him to be, in whatever scheme they need him to be in.

And that, in a nutshell, is everything that the former Temple Owl is all about.

The Redskins have a plan to use him in multiple spots up and down the defensive line. And even though he is a bit somewhat undersized, McCloughan is OK with that, because he becomes a versatile piece in whatever scheme they are working in.

In a story filed by ESPN, officials said after he was drafted, that the Redskins initially said he’d be an end in their base and a tackle in their nickel.

However, McCloughan has also said he can play nose tackle in their base scheme, noting they are only in that set anywhere from 20 – 25% of the time.

When I said he was of the “undersized” variety, at 299, he could stand to put on another 10 or so pounds, as that would be a help for him later in the season.

But if there is a guy who can figure it out, it’s Ioannidis.

And McCloughan, who loves the type of player He is.

And he doesn’t hide it.

He doesn’t look like Terrance Knighton, but this team will be a good team because we have a couple guys who are special and the majority will be good. He’s one of the good guys”, McCloughan said.

To quote Matt Ioannidis himself:

Every day with maximum effort is how I approach it,” Ioannidis said. “I’ll play anywhere. It doesn’t matter to me. I don’t know where I fit in or how I’ll help or what I’m going to do. I know it sounds like a cliché, but all I know is I’ll do what’s asked of me and wherever I fit, I fit. I’ll get the job done whatever is asked of me.”

Both the Redskins and their fans will love that about him too.
