Second baseman dealt for player to be named later or cash considerations

With the White Sox approaching five years of disappointing production at second base, they finally committed to trying somebody new, trading Gordon Beckham to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

The Sox probably hoped to move Beckham before the non-waiver trade deadline, but Beckham's production plummeted off a cliff, and maybe into an abyss, since he hasn't yet found the bottom.

He leaves Chicago on the lowest note imaginable, at least with the bat. His OPS dropped to .598 after an 0-for-3 game Tuesday, and he's hitting just  .158/.180/.211 since July 1, a stretch spanning 163 plate appearances. His July OPS (.371) was the worst monthly OPS by a White Sox starter in 46 years, and his .424 mark in August barely constituted an improvement.

While the hope for any trade value had evaporated, the opportunity value remained. The White Sox have two potential replacements on the 40-man roster in Marcus Semien and Carlos Sanchez, and one will be called up in a corresponding move on Friday.

It's a move that could've been made weeks sooner ... or maybe a day later, since Beckham just wished the Jackie Robinson West Little League team luck in its upcoming game on the club's Instagram account today.
