Western Michigan eases past Cornell 83-70

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) -- Shayne Whittington and Connar Tava both had double-doubles to lead Western Michigan to an 83-70 victory over Cornell Friday night.

David Brown, who came into the game averaging 22.5 points a game for Western Michigan (5-2), was held to just 16. However the other Broncos stepped up as Tava totaled 16 points and 13 rebounds and Whittington had 14 points while pulling down 12 rebounds. Austin Richie contributed 15 points.

The Broncos took the lead 16-12 on a Brown layup and free throw at the 12:32 mark in the first period and held a 34-32 halftime advantage.

Dwight Tarwater made a 3-pointer to give Cornell (0-8) a 35-34 lead to start the second period. A Brown layup and free throw put the Broncos out front to stay early in the final period.

Nolan Cressler had 27 points and Hatter added 22 for Cornell.
