Wells runs dry; former Cubs pitcher retires

Former Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Randy Wells called it quits after failing to make the Texas Rangers' roster during the spring.

Wells struggled in April with Round Rock, the Rangers' Class AAA affiliate, going 0-5 with a 6.08 ERA in five starts, and announced his decision to retire on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old Wells pitched for the Cubs from 2009 to 2012 and compiled a 28-32 record with a 4.08 ERA. His best season was his rookie year in 2009 when he won 12 games and posted a 3.05 ERA.

The Rangers confirmed the news, as did Wells, who turned to Twitter to thank Cubs fans for their support through the years.
