Week 8 NFC Targets and Touches

Evan Silva breaks down the 2017 Buccaneers for his Team Fantasy Preview series

In case you missed it, the AFC Targets and Touches column can be found here.

From here on out, this column will only have players’ six most recent games, regardless if they were active or on a bye. Targets and touches will be in descending order of games played.

All targets and touches data is compiled from Pro Football Reference.

Note: if a player has an asterisk next to a number in their data set, that indicates the player was injured during the game. Also, this data will stick to fantasy relevant players meaning that running backs and wide receivers that only see one target or touch per-game will not be included.

Analysis: John Brown’s target per route percentage in the Cardinals' last four games: 22%, 22%, 31.8%, and 21.4%. Here’s Larry Fitzgerald’s target/route percentage from Week 4 on: 20%, 38.9%, 22.7%, and 17.9%.

Atlanta Falcons

Targets: Julio Jones (15, 20, 6, 10, 10, 17), Devonta Freeman (8, 5, 6, 8, 10, 3), Roddy White (1, 0, 4, 4, 4, 4), Leonard Hankerson (11, 6, 8, 4, 6, 0*), Tevin Coleman (1*, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1), Jacob Tamme (6, 1, 0, 10, 5, 5)

Analysis: I love the Falcons offense for fantasy purposes. It’s so easy to diagnose on a week-to-week basis because we know exactly who is going to touch the ball. In week 7 against the Titans, Julio Jones and Devonta Freeman accounted for 65.2% of the Falcons’ offensive opportunities (targets and carries). Atlanta’s offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan continually finds ways to get the ball to his two best players.

Carolina Panthers

Targets: Greg Olsen (3, 14, 11, 6, 11, 5), Jonathan Stewart (4, 1, 1, 0, 1, 1), Ted Ginn (7, 9, 6, 3, 4, 8), Devin Funchess (2, 4, 4, 2, 6, 2), Jerricho Cotchery (6, 1, 0, 0, 4, 1), Corey Brown (3, 4, 0, 3, 3, 5)

Red zone Targets: Greg Olsen (1, 1, 5, 2, 0, 0), Ted Ginn (1, 0, 0, 2, 0, 0), Devin Funchess (0, 0, 1, 1, 0, 0), Corey Brown (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 2)

Red zone Carries: Jonathan Stewart (4, 1, 2, 1, 5, 5), Cam Newton (2, 2, 3, 2, 1, 1), Mike Tolbert (0, 1, 4, 2, 0, 2)

CBs Thrown At: Josh Norman 9, 12, 6, 8, 2, 2 (3-15-1, 6-40, 4-43, 2-31, 2-(-2), 1-3), Bene Benwikere 12, 10, 8, 5, 3, 8 (8-47, 6-52, 6-50, 4-39, 1-2, 7-62), Charles Tillman 3, 7, 9, 3, 6, 5 (1-27, 4-61, 8-77, 2-15, 2-17, 2-17)

Analysis: From the stat-machine Rich Hribar himself: after a season low 30.3% of the team attempts in Week 4, Jonathan Stewart has come out of Carolina’s bye with 60.6% (against Seattle) and 72.7% (against Philadelphia) of the Panthers’ carries (in back-to-back games).

Red zone Carries: Matt Forte (4, 1, 0, 3) – No Red zone carries in Week 5

CBs Thrown At: Kyle Fuller 4, 4, 2, 2, 3 (2-46, 3-60-2, 1-4, 1-17, 2-15), Tracy Porter 10, 8 (5-58, 4-61-1), Sherrick McManis 3, 2, 3, 7, 3 (3-19-1, 2-12-1, 3-15, 4-60-1, 1-12) – Week 6 Unavailable per PFF

Dallas Cowboys

Red zone Targets: Jason Witten (3, 1, 0, 0, 2, 1), Cole Beasley (2, 1, 0, 1, 0, 0), Terrance Williams (2, 1, 0, 5, 1, 0), Gavin Escobar (1, 2, 0, 0, 2, 0), Darren McFadden (0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0)

Red zone Carries: Joseph Randle (1, 2, 2, 2, 1, 0) and Darren McFadden (1, 0, 3, 0, 1, 3)

CBs Thrown At: Brandon Carr 6, 4, 7, 8, 1, 5 (3-13, 2-24-1, 5-54-1, 8-57-1, 1-16, 4-73) and Morris Claiborne 5, 6, 11, 11, 4, 2 (3-33, 5-28, 6-77, 7-67, 4-120-1, 0-0)

Analysis: We all will be following Dez Bryant's (foot) possible return this week, so instead let's switch it over and take a look at the Cowboys' backfield... It’s still early in the week, but it sounds like Joseph Randle (oblique) may miss Week 8. In any event, Cowboys’ head coach Jason Garrett said on Tuesday Darren McFadden has, “absolutely earned more work.” Neither Randle nor McFadden has exactly lit the world on fire, but McFadden has arguably been slightly better on a per-carry basis through six games. Here’s a breakdown of their yardage gained percentage on a per attempt basis:

Detroit Lions

Targets: Calvin Johnson (17, 13, 11, 7, 9, 7), Eric Ebron (10, 5, 3*, 0, 0, 5), Golden Tate (10, 7, 4, 18, 9, 6), Ameer Abdullah (1, 5, 5, 2, 4, 0), Theo Riddick (6, 10, 5, 13, 6, 4), Joique Bell (2, 1, 0, 0, 0, 2), Lance Moore (2, 6, 3, 3, 8, 6)

RB Touches: Ameer Abdullah (7, 10, 15, 7, 17, 8), Joique Bell (6, 11, 0, 0, 0, 5), Theo Riddick (6, 8, 6, 10, 10, 6)

Red zone Targets: Calvin Johnson (2, 3, 1, 0, 2, 2), Ameer Abdullah (1, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0), Golden Tate (1, 1, 0, 0, 3, 0), Theo Riddick (0, 3, 0, 1, 0, 2), Lance Moore (2, 0, 0, 2, 1, 0), Eric Ebron (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1)

Red zone Carries: Joique Bell (0, 2, 0, 0, 0, 0), Ameer Abdullah (0, 0, 1, 0, 2, 2), Theo Riddick (0, 0, 0, 0, 2, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Rashean Mathis 4, 11, 2, 5, 2, 8 (4-22, 8-43, 2-84, 4-63-1, 1-46, 6-112-1) and Darius Slay 2, 6, 5, 2, 6, 5 (2-9-1, 5-123-1, 3-26, 2-25, 2-22, 4-51)

Analysis: With offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi out and replaced by “Jim Bob Cooter”, the Lions offense will be one to watch in London against the Chiefs. All of Detroit’s problems on offense do not stem from Lombardi alone, however. According to Football Outsiders, Detroit ranks 24th in run blocking but are 8th in pass blocking (adjusted sack rate of 5.1%). We’ll see if “Cooter” can scheme ways to get the ball in Ameer Abdullah’s hands more effectively and if he’s willing to shovel Calvin Johnson more than the 7.7 targets per-game he’s averaged over the Lions’ last three contests.

Green Bay Packers – On Bye in Week 7

Targets: Randall Cobb (5, 11, 12, 8, 6, 5), Davante Adams (8, 5, 2*, 0, 0, 0), Eddie Lacy (3, 0*, 3, 3, 1, 2), James Jones (4, 3, 8, 6, 3, 5), Richard Rodgers (3, 4, 4, 6, 8, 5), James Starks (0, 4, 1, 2, 6, 2), Ty Montgomery (0, 4, 2, 6, 5, 2), Jeff Janis (0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 4)

Minnesota Vikings

Targets: Mike Wallace (7, 3, 4, 10, 9, 5), Kyle Rudolph (7, 7, 5, 4, 5, 2), Charles Johnson (3, 3, 4, 0, 0, 2), Jarius Wright (4, 2, 4, 0, 3, 6), Adrian Peterson (3, 2, 0, 6, 1, 3), Stefon Diggs (0, 0, 0, 9, 9, 9)

RB Touches: Adrian Peterson (13, 31, 20, 16, 27, 22)

Red zone Targets: Kyle Rudolph (0, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1), Adrian Peterson (0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0), Jarius Wright (0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1), Mike Wallace (0, 0, 0, 2, 2, 1), Stefon Diggs (0, 0, 0, 2, 0, 1)

Red zone Carries: Adrian Peterson (0, 12, 6, 0, 5, 3)

CBs Thrown At: Xavier Rhodes 6, 13, 5*, 5, 9, 5 (4-38, 7-62-1, 3-79-1, 4-72, 4-70-1, 4-40-1), Terence Newman 4, 5, 8, 7, 5, 0 (3-20, 2-17, 6-42, 4-63, 2-11, 0-0), Captain Munnerlyn 0, 9, 2, 5, 4, 6 (0-0, 6-45, 2-45, 4-36, 2-1, 3-55)

Analysis: 40.4% of Adrian Peterson’s total rushing yards (530) has come on five of his 120 total carries. Here are Peterson’s weekly finishes so far (PPR): RB38, RB4, RB7, RB9, bye, RB36, and RB19.

Stefon Diggs' PPR finishes over the last four weeks: WR25, bye, WR15, and WR7. He needs to be owned in all league formats at this point; he’s posted receiving yardage totals of 87 (against Broncos), 129 (against Chiefs), and 108 (against Lions) in his first three games as a rookie and has given the previously life-less Vikings' receiving core an explosive element it sorely missed to open the season.

New Orleans Saints

Targets: Brandin Cooks (7, 8, 8, 9, 5, 13), Mark Ingram (3, 5, 7, 3, 3, 2), Marques Colston (5, 6, 5, 5, 0, 3), C.J. Spiller (1, 2, 5, 4, 5, 6), Khiry Robinson (1, 2, 4, 2, 2, 1), Ben Watson (4, 4, 3, 5, 12, 5), Willie Snead (7, 6, 11, 5, 7), Josh Hill (4, 1, 2, 1, 5, 1)

Red zone Carries: Mark Ingram (4, 3, 4, 1, 5, 3), Khiry Robinson (0, 1, 1, 0, 2, 4), C.J. Spiller (1, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Brandon Browner 4, 5, 5, 7, 5, 4 (2-25, 4-139, 3-78, 5-54, 4-47-1, 2-27-1) and Delvin Breaux 3, 2, 9, 7, 6, 10 (1-54, 0-0, 2-41-1, 6-58, 2-20, 4-150-2)

Analysis: Here are Mark Ingram’s PPR finishes so far: RB7, RB16, RB11, RB10, RB36, RB8, and RB6. Outside of Devonta Freeman and Le’Veon Bell, Ingram has arguably been fantasy’s second or third most consistent back through Week 7.

New York Giants

Targets: Odell Beckham (12, 9, 12, 11, 8, 6), Shane Vereen (8, 3, 0, 8, 4, 3), Rueben Randle (2, 7, 6, 6*, 6, 5), Larry Donnell (6, 6, 7, 7, 5, 5), Rashad Jennings (2, 3, 2, 4, 3, 0), Andre Williams (0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0) Dwayne Harris (0, 1, 6, 8, 4, 2), Orleans Darkwa (1)

Red zone Carries: Rashad Jennings (0, 1, 2, 1, 0, 0), Andre Williams (1, 2, 0, 2, 0, 0), Shane Vereen (0, 0, 0, 2, 0, 1), Orleans Darkwa (1)

CBs Thrown At: Prince Amukamara 10, 4, 8, 9, 5 (7-52, 3-49, 4-54, 4-58, 3-16-1) – Inactive in Week 6 and 7 (Pectoral tear) and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie 2, 0*, 1, 5, 5, 6 (1-2, 0-0*, 0-0, 3-19, 5-62, 2-38)

Analysis: A three-headed monster wasn’t enough for the Giants, as Orleans Darkwa received eight touches in Week 7 against the Cowboys. Here was the Giants’ backfield snap split in Week 7: Shane Vereen (23), Darkwa (14), Rashad Jennings (11), and Andre Williams (5). Per Player Profiler, Darkwa is a solid athlete at 6’0” and 215 pounds – he owns a 82nd percentile Burst Score and 71st percentile Speed Score. Darkwa is worth a tentative waiver add at this point.

Philadelphia Eagles

Targets: Jordan Matthews (9, 8, 8, 7, 11, 7), Zach Ertz (7, 2, 3, 7, 7, 8), Darren Sproles (4, 6, 3, 2, 2, 10), DeMarco Murray (5, 0, 2, 8, 4, 4), Nelson Agholor (6, 4, 4, 1*, 0, 0), Ryan Mathews (0, 4, 0, 3, 1, 3)

RB Touches: DeMarco Murray (17, 0, 10, 27, 26, 20), Darren Sproles (5, 15, 4, 6, 3, 8), Ryan Mathews (1, 27, 5, 11, 10, 9)

Red zone Targets: Jordan Matthews (2, 1, 0, 2, 0, 1), DeMarco Murray (1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Zach Ertz (1, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1), Nelson Agholor (1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Darren Sproles (0, 1, 1, 0, 0, 1), Ryan Mathews (0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0)

Red zone Carries: DeMarco Murray (3, 0, 1, 5, 1, 3), Ryan Mathews (0, 3, 0, 2, 1, 0), Darren Sproles (0, 3, 0, 0, 0, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Byron Maxwell 9, 6, 0*, 4, 5, 6 (6-86-1, 6-75 0-0, 2-39, 4-38. 3-18) and Nolan Carroll 5, 9, 9, 11, 8, 7 (4-26, 5-49, 6-79, 6-113, 5-39, 5-84)

Analysis: Heading into the bye, DeMarco Murray has three straight games of 20 or more touches in every contest and his weekly PPR finishes in those games are as follow: RB4, RB7, and RB30. The good news: he’s finally receiving a workhorse’s workload. The bad news: he’s arguably being out-played by Ryan Mathews, as Rich Hribar noted.

San Francisco 49ers

Targets: Vernon Davis (7, 2, 0, 0, 1, 6), Anquan Boldin (10, 4, 7, 12, 9, 7), Torrey Smith (7, 2, 5, 2, 6, 1), Carlos Hyde (4, 1, 1, 5, 2, 0), Quinton Patton (4, 3, 2, 3, 3, 3), Mike Davis (4, 3, 0, 0, 0, 0), Reggie Bush (0, 0, 3, 0, 0, 5)

RB Touches: Carlos Hyde (19, 16, 9, 22, 23, 11), Reggie Bush (0, 0, 2, 1, 0, 7), Mike Davis (0, 9, 8, 0, 1, 0)

Red zone Targets: Vernon Davis (1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1), Anquan Boldin (3, 1, 1, 5, 3, 1), Carlos Hyde (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Torrey Smith (2, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0), Reggie Bush (0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0), Mike Davis (3, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0)

Red zone Carries: Carlos Hyde (5, 1, 1, 1, 5, 5), Mike Davis (0, 5, 0, 0, 0, 0), Colin Kaepernick (0, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0) – No red zone carries in Week 7

CBs Thrown At: Tramaine Brock 4, 8, 4, 7, 10, 4 (4-76, 4-65-1, 3-15, 4-90, 4-57, 3-80-1), Kenneth Acker 7, 6, 7, 6, 5, 2 (6-120, 3-38, 5-98, 3-37, 2-41-1, 1-7), Jimmie Ward 1, 1, 7, 9, 6, 1 (0-0, 1-8-1, 5-44, 7-53, 6-47-1, 1-4)

Analysis: Every single week, I stare at the 49ers offense here and try to think of something positive to say. Once again -- after scoring just three points, picking up eight first downs, and averaging 3.16 yards per play at home against the Seahawks in Week 7 -- I have nothing to say.

Seattle Seahawks

Targets: Doug Baldwin (8, 3, 4, 3, 4, 3), Jimmy Graham (2, 8, 5, 5, 12, 5), Marshawn Lynch (6, 1*, 0, 0, 3, 0), Tyler Lockett (2, 1, 5, 5, 2, 5), Fred Jackson (2, 2, 4*, 3, 2, 4), Luke Willson (4, 0, 3, 3, 1, 0), Jermaine Kearse (2, 6, 2, 3, 3, 4), Thomas Rawls (0, 1, 1, 0, 0, 2)

Red zone Carries: Marshawn Lynch (1, 0*, 0, 0, 5, 6), Fred Jackson (1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Russell Wilson (1, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0), Thomas Rawls (0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Richard Sherman 1, 3, 3, 6, 4, 0 (2-29, 1-13, 1-9, 2-21, 5-60, 3-51, 0-0) and Cary Williams 2, 0, 8, 7, 7, 1 (1-5-1, 0-0, 4-28, 5-73-1, 5-77, 1-27)

Analysis: Marshawn Lynch as we know him was back in Week 7 against the 49ers. Nine of "BeastMode's" 27 carries (33.3%) went for five or more yards as he hammered San Francisco for 122 total rushing yards. Now seemingly fully healthy and past his bye week, Lynch is back to being a no-brainer “RB1” (top-12) start every week.

St. Louis Rams

Targets: Todd Gurley (0, 0, 1, 2, 0, 5), Tavon Austin (5, 3, 5, 7, 5, 7), Jared Cook (6, 7, 3, 6, 6, 4), Kenny Britt (3, 4, 10, 1, 4, 2), Tre Mason (0, 5, 1, 0, 0, 0), Benny Cunningham (7, 6, 2, 2, 2, 2), Stedman Bailey (4, 4, 1, 3, 5, 1), Lance Kendricks (2, 2, 5, 2, 3, 0)

Analysis: Todd Gurley is unreal. He’s averaged 7.7, 5.3, and 6.7 yards per carry over his last three games and an absurd 24 of his 68 carries (35.3%) have gone for 5 or more yards in Week 4, 5, and 7. He’s legitimately a fantasy league-winning player at this point.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Analysis: With Vincent Jackson (knee) likely out this week and Louis Murphy (ACL) out for the season, Mike Evans could see well over 10-plus targets against Atlanta in Week 8.

Washington

Targets: Jordan Reed (6, 9, 8, 0, 0, 13), Pierre Garcon (7, 12, 8, 8, 8, 6), Matt Jones (3, 0, 0, 2, 0, 4), Alfred Morris (2, 0, 3, 0, 1, 1), Ryan Grant (6, 5, 7, 4, 4, 3), Jamison Crowder (1, 6, 12, 8, 9, 5), Chris Thompson (1, 11, 3, 7, 10, 0)

Analysis: Here are Jordan Reed’s tight end finishes (PPR) in the five games he has played (Week 1-4 and 7): TE6, TE6, TE6, TE21, and TE1. The one week where Reed did not finish inside of the top-12 tight ends in PPR output was against the Eagles who are currently the 9th best team against opposing tight ends. Reed is a high-end TE1 every week he is active.
