Week 17 Target Watch

Welcome to the targets and touches for Week 17 of the NFL season.

I have all the targets for each player since Week 12, and then in parentheses are the total and then average targets per game played for that player. Then below that I have the Red Zone targets and touches for each player, now sorted for rushing attempts and passing targets from Week 12 on for your pleasure. Arizona Cardinals

You don’t see too many winning quarterbacks going 13-of-25 for 178 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions, but that’s exactly what Carson Palmer did in a 17-10 win, the first loss for Seattle at home in two years.

As you might expect, the Cardinals’ defense led the team in fantasy points with Jay Feely not far behind. That of course doesn’t leave many fantasy points for others, but it was good to see Michael Floyd catch the game winner. It was his only catch of the day, but it was a great one that shows he can get it done in a big spot.

Matt Ryan had his best fantasy game since Week 7 and most passing yards since Week 4 as he eclipsed 4,000 total yards for the third straight season. A big chunk of his 348 yards on the day went to Roddy White who caught 12 of 16 targets for 141 yards and a touchdown. That was the most receiving yardage the 49ers had allowed to a single wide receiver all season.

Next season hopefully Julio Jones is back to full health because Ryan will once again be a worthy fantasy play all year if he is.

Joe Flacco had a poor game against the Patriots as he threw two interceptions and no touchdowns. Over the last six games he has six total touchdowns and three of those came in one game against the hapless Vikings. This offense is not clicking. The run game continues to go nowhere and the Flacco to Torrey Smith connection isn’t connecting. The return of Dennis Pitta seemed like it would be a boost to the offense, but his last two games have been duds. There is absolutely no consistency from this team.

Thad Lewis didn’t need to do a ton in this game with Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller combining for 188 yards rushing and a touchdown. And you can’t forget the Dan Carpenter revenge factor!

Robert Woods continues to flash big play ability with three receptions for 70 yards on five targets, but that was really the only bright spot in the passing game. E.J. Manuel should return this week to get some more reps to build on next season.

Cam Newton did his best Tim Tebow impersonation in this one as he was awful most of the game and then led his team down for the game winning drive. This win is set pretty firmly on the backs of the Panthers’ defense with no receiver topping four receptions or 66 yards and Newton only completing 13-of-22 for 188 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Of course Newton is a better quarterback than his play against New Orleans, but he’ll need to be more consistent to make a run in the playoffs.

The Bears were absolutely destroyed by the Eagles last Sunday night and there is no way around that fact. The defense as usual was run all over while the offense could only muster 11 points against a team Matt Cassel and Greg Jennings completely lit up the week before.

The targets between Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall evened out this week with nine each while Marshall got into the end zone, but Jeffery had more receptions and yards. At this point I’ll be drafting Jeffery ahead of Marshall next season.

Andy Dalton is having a great season, but it doesn’t feel like it’s been as good as it has been. He’s currently the fifth best fantasy quarterback this year, but it’s been a bit of a roller coaster ride. Here are his weekly points this season 15, 16, 13, 5, 8, 24, 26, 31, 6, 14, 11, BYE, 9, 30, 19, 31. That kind of inconsistency sometimes made him tough to start on the games he went off and then made it tough to sit him on games he didn’t.

A.J. Green is hovering around his numbers from last season. Last week he caught seven of 13 targets for 93 yards and two touchdowns to put him at 94/1365/10. Last season he finished with a line of 97/1350/11. It looks like an injury would be the only thing to keep him from being a consistent top 5 fantasy receiver for years to come.

Josh Gordon leads all wide receivers in targets since his suspension as well as in total yards, but he leads the league in total yards even counting the missed games. He has only caught 53.7% of his targets, which is low, but has an amazing 19.6 yards per reception. If you factor in the carousel of sub-par quarterbacks and his low percentage deep ball targets, he’s doing pretty well for himself.

Dez Bryant led the team in targets with 11 and caught four for 73 yards and a touchdown, but it looks like the Cowboys finally figured out that getting the ball to Terrance Williams over Miles Austin was the best choice as he caught four of six targets for 84 yards to lead the team while Austin had just two targets and caught one for eight yards. It will be extremely surprising to see Austin ahead of Williams on the depth chart next season.

Of course this one will go down in the record books as being Peyton Manning’s record breaking 51st touchdown game, but it also marks a huge finish to the season for Eric Decker. In the last four games he caught 28 passes for 464 yards and seven touchdowns. That includes a game where he caught two passes for 42 yards! He had just three touchdowns in the first 11 games compared to the seven in the last four. That puts five Broncos’ players over 10 touchdowns. That is a record. This team is one big fat record.

As Calvin Johnson goes so goes Matthew Stafford. Stafford's fantasy points by week go - 20, 17, 21, 15, 14, 23, 26, 26, BYE, 18, 22, 15, 19, 6, 7, 6. As you can see the last three weeks have been the worst by far. The fact that they coincide with the fantasy playoffs didn’t help any of his owners much. His poor numbers coincide with Calvin Johnson playing injured or not playing at all this season. The Lions desperately need to find more receiving talent because Stafford isn't going anywhere.

Matt Flynn gave it the old college try, but Aaron Rodgers will be back in Week 17 and all the stats over the last five weeks are outdated. Jordy Nelson in seven full games with Aaron Rodgers averaged 5.5 catches, 92.7 yards, and 7 total touchdowns. Nelson in seven games without Rodgers averaged 4.5 catches for 62.4 yards and one total touchdown. I think they may be better with Rodgers at the helm, but I’m just guessing.

Matt Schaub remains not very good at football this season. With Case Keenum out with an injury, Schaub got the start against the Broncos at home and completed just 18-of-37 passes for 176 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Schaub’s descent into less than mediocrity is fully complete and this Texans’ team isn’t going to look like the Texans of the last few years next season.

Griff Whalen was your targets, receptions and yards leader for the Colts last Sunday. This is a player just signed off their practice squad a couple weeks ago. But Da’Rick Rogers didn’t have a NFL reception when he went off a couple weeks ago, so really some guy named Ducky Singleton could lead them in receiving next week for all I know.

I do know one thing and that is I was wrong about Trent Richardson, at least for this season. Donald Brown on the other hand continues to play well after most had given up on him. He totaled 110 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 touches against Kansas City while Richardson had 19 touches for 58 yards and no touchdowns. The numbers speak for themselves there.

But he has been getting his teammates some receiving touchdowns, especially Marcedes Lewis who has now caught a touchdown in each of his last four games.

The Patriots scored two defensive touchdowns in the last two minutes of the game so that 41 points doesn’t really coincide with the offensive output from the Patriots who only totaled 300 yards. Short passing to Julian Edelman and a steady dose of Stevan Ridley and LeGarrette Blount got the job done.

Edelman remains the target king and leads the team on the season in targets, receptions, yards and receiving touchdowns. It’s been a weird season for the Patriots but Edelman has been the one consistent force and should finish the season with 100 receptions and 1,000 yards.

Matthew Stafford gave this game away on a pick-six to tie it up and go into overtime. Neither team looked like they wanted to win, but somehow the Giants backed into the win. Both teams should be embarrassed.

While other teams throw in the towel on the season the Jets are amazingly playing some decent football after playing a whole bunch of awful football. Geno Smith’s two alter-egos continue to show up when you least expect them, but this week “Good Geno” played well against a good Browns’ defense completing 20-of36 passes for 214 yards, two touchdowns and most importantly, no interceptions. He also rushed 10 times for 48 yards and a touchdown.

The return of Jeremy Kerley has been a nice addition for Smith and you can tell he plays better knowing he has Kerley’s stable presence in the game. This is all of course in relation to how he had been playing, so all the praise is through that lens of lowered expectations.

The Raiders wide receiver talent continues to help cancel each other out, especially with very little talent at the quarterback position. Unless your name is Peyton Manning it’s going to be impossible to give Rod Streater, Denarius Moore and Andre Holmes enough productive targets to give any of them any kind of fantasy football consistency. Andre Holmes led them all last week with five receptions on eight targets for 71 yards and no touchdowns, while no other wide receiver topped three receptions or 17 receiving yards. We’ll continue to want these talented receivers on our fake teams, but they’ll continue being extremely inconsistent.

Antonio Brown was once again the most targeted Steelers’ player. His 13 eclipsed Heath Miller’s four, which came in second. Brown has had five or more receptions in every game this season and has broken the Steelers single season receiving yardage mark. Right now Brown and Le'Veon Bell are taking up a huge chunk of the production each week, which is actually a pretty nice balance when working well. The Steelers’ defense is the weak link at the moment.

Keenan Allen had a few chances, but Philip Rivers was not on target in this one. He had seven targets, but could only reel in three for 26 yards and a touchdown. He was wide open for another short touchdown that Rivers missed him on. With Rivers off his game Ryan Mathews once again played a big role in the offense and totaled 119 yards and a touchdown on 28 touches. He’s been playing through injuries this season and proving he can do so and be productive at the same time. He’ll be a high risk/reward back next season once again, but his track record has just gotten much better.

Russell Wilson had probably his worst game in a Seahawks’ uniform against Arizona, completing just 11-of-27 passes for 108 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Of course that didn’t leave many yards for receivers, but thankfully for tight end streamers who target the Cardinals, Zach Miller managed a touchdown.

It looked like Marshawn Lynch was going to get some room early on to run, but after some early success he was held in check for 71 yards on 18 carries. That’s actually more than the Cardinals have been giving up to running backs lately. Over the last eight games Arizona is allowing 48.8 rushing yards per game at 2.9 yards per carry to opposing running backs.

That’s not a great yards per carry of 3.15, but it was a workmanlike effort from Stacy who has proven himself as a hard-nosed runner who they can rely on.

Vincent Jackson has had his usual trouble with consistency this season, but he’s also been playing through injuries and a rookie quarterback. He was the only bright spot for the Buccaneers against the Rams as he caught five of 10 targets for 98 yards.

After Jackson the offense has been in a tremendous funk. The huge 163 yard, three touchdown game by Bobby Rainey to start his tenure as a Buc and then his 80 yard touchdown against Buffalo weren’t enough to get his yards per carry over 4. That’s not going to get the job done in the NFL.

Nate Washington hasn’t dropped a pass all season and on Sunday caught six of eight targets for 117 yards and a touchdown. He’s never been a good fantasy player, but he has turned into a good real life player.

The run game was what did most of the damage with Chris Johnson carrying the ball 22 times for 90 yards and Shonn Greene carrying the ball 19 times for 91 yards and a touchdown. That’s a bunch of carries right there and by far the most for Shonn Greene this season.

Kirk Cousins completed 21-of-36 passes for 197 yards, one touchdown and one interception and Pierre Garcon caught 11 of 18 targets for 144 yards and a touchdown. The other 53 receiving yards were split up between six players.

Alfred Morris rushed 22 times for 88 yards and a touchdown, which is actually his best fantasy game since Week 9. Since he doesn’t catch many passes he pretty much needs touchdowns to be the RB1 we know he can be, but he only has seven on the season compared to his 13 last season.
