Week 16 Target Watch: AFC
Welcome to the AFC targets and touches for Week 16 of the NFL season. The NFC portion can be found with a click of the clicky thing.
I have all the targets for each player since Week 11, and then in parentheses are the total and then average targets per game played for that player. Then below that I have the Red Zone targets and touches for each player, now sorted for rushing attempts and passing targets from Week 11 on. If ever a game was dominated by a kicker, this was the one. Justin Tucker hit a team record six field goals along with the game winner, a 61 yarder as time ran out. He was the only Raven to put any points on the board so you can guess how the other offensive players fared.
Torrey Smith saw 12 targets after just five last week in the snow, but only caught four of them for 69 yards. In a great matchup Joe Flacco was only able to throw for 222 yards on 38 pass attempts. He didn’t throw an interception or a touchdown of course. This game fits into his home/away splits for the season. In seven home games he is completing 61.8% of his passes and has 10 touchdowns to six interceptions for an 85.6 passer rating, but in his seven road games he is completing 56.6% of his passes with eight touchdowns to 11 interceptions and a 69.0 quarterback rating.

Robert Woods was the target leader in this one with six, which he caught five of for 82 yards and a touchdown. E.J. Manuel was much better than last week completing 17-of-24 passes for 193 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while also running 10 times for 37 yards and another touchdown. He did hurt his knee in the process though and will miss this week’s game.

A.J. Green caught eight passes for 93 yards, which isn’t bad, even for him, but the fact that he saw 18 targets makes it a little bad. The Steelers seem to have his number for the most part throughout his young career.
Since his four touchdown game Marvin Jones had hit the skids pretty hard with just eight receptions for 89 yards in the four games after, but in his last two he has nine receptions for 108 yards and two touchdowns on 13 targets.

Jason Campbell unfortunately reverted to Jason Campbell against the Bears as he completed 23-of-39 for 273 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Josh Gordon coming off the best three games for a receiver ever was thwarted by Campbell’s inaccuracy more than anything. Thankfully for his fantasy owners he was able to catch a garbage-time touchdown and turn his team-high ten targets into three receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown.

The loss of Wes Welker for this game was a huge boon to Andre Caldwell who led the team with 11 targets, six receptions, 59 yards and two touchdowns. After him the targets and yards were pretty spread out. Montee Ball and Knowshon Moreno both had five receptions. Ball’s five receptions and 49 yards were both highs for him.

Case Keenum played about as poorly as he could, completing 18-of-34 for 168 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Keenum had been able to give Andre Johnson enough targets to keep him flush with fantasy points, but not this week. Keenum’s inaccuracy coupled with some uncharacteristic drops left him with just four receptions for 18 yards.
Ryan Griffin, the backup to the backup tight end, had the best game of the receivers with six receptions on six targets for 62 yards.

After a pretty meaningful slump the Colts looked to get T.Y. Hilton back into a rhythm with 12 targets. It was somewhat successful as he caught eight passes for 78 yards, which was a pretty big chunk of Andrew Luck’s 180 total yards.
Trent Richardson had one of his best games as a Colt with 102 total yards and a touchdown on 23 touches. It wasn’t a dominant performance by any means, but it was a step forward from his abysmal play this year.

With Cecil Shorts out for this game, running back Jordan Todman and tight end Marcedes Lewis led in targets. Lewis caught his third touchdown in the last three games and looks like a big part of the offense with Shorts out.
Jordan Todman had eight targets, catching four for 44 yards and also ran the ball 25 times for 109 yards. That’s 33 looks, which is a ton for anyone in the 2013 version of the NFL. He looked good for the most part and may be winning a chance at lead back duties for next season.

Do you mind if I just write JAMAAL CHARLES here and go on with the other teams? Ok, well, he played pretty well. He was the target leader with eight and Dwayne Bowe was second with four. He totaled 215 of Kansas City’s 385 yards and 195 of Alex Smith’s 287 yards passing. And of course he had five of their seven offensive touchdowns. He was the total offense. Knile Davis chipped in a touchdown run in garbage time, but this was all Charles, all game.

If you take out the Steelers’ game, Mike Wallace has had a nice run of late. And even if you keep that Steelers’ game intact he has 20 receptions on 33 targets for 333 yards and three touchdowns over the last four games. (If he had 33 receptions my day would have been made).
That also coincides with some strong games from Ryan Tannehill. In that stretch he is averaging 288.3 yards per game and has nine touchdowns and three interceptions. He finishes off with two good matchups and they hold their playoff destiny in their hands, so it will be interesting to see if he can keep this up.

Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola are the kings of targetry, well, for this game at least. Together they saw 33 targets and caught 23 for 270 yards and one touchdown. Of course the touchdowns were needed a little more than the rest of that, but the rest of that is pretty amazing for fantasy. Without true playmakers like Gronkowski they’ll need to continue with the shorter passing game.
Miami did a good job of keeping Shane Vereen from beating them, which paid off. He is their biggest playmaker at the moment and they would much rather give up shorter passes to Edelman and Amendola than Vereen.

Santonio Holmes led the team in targets with eight, but only caught two for 14 yards. Jeff Cumberland led the team in yards receiving with 50 on three receptions. Chris Ivory looked good on just 11 carries for 66 yards, but was vultured by Sheldon Richardson at the goal line. It’s actually amazing that they moved the ball enough to score 20 points on the Panthers.

Oakland scored 31 points on Kansas City, which is pretty amazing, but of course Kansas City scored 56. Matt McGloin threw four interceptions in pass-first mode, so it’s a good idea not to get him in pass-first mode. He threw the ball the most to Rod Streater, but only could complete four of 10 targets for 59 yards.
The fantasy winner for Oakland was Rashad Jennings who got in on two goal line runs and totaled 103 yards on 26 touches. He has set himself up well to compete with and possibly beat out Darren McFadden for the starting job next season.

Ben Roethlisberger completed 20-of-25 passes for 191 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Antonio Brown once again caught five passes. He has yet to dip below five all season. He also caught a touchdown and returned a punt for a touchdown. And after just two touchdowns in the first seven games he now has six in the last seven, not counting the punt return.
Le’Veon Bell continues to piece together good games. In this game he had five targets and caught all five for 50 yards and also ran the ball 24 times for 57 yards and a touchdown. As you can see, his ability in the passing game really pays off in fantasy, and not just in PPR leagues. Since his first game in Week 4 he has averaged 22 touches per game.

Ryan Mathews was the engine behind the Chargers’ offense in this one as he rushed 27 times for 127 yards and a touchdown. Last week he also rushed 29 times. I don’t think I have to even look up the stats to see if that has happened before; it hasn’t. He had eight first down runs and helped keep Peyton Manning off the field, which is exactly what you have to do to beat him.

Kendall Wright showed once again why he is going to be a star in this league as he caught 12 passes on 20 targets for 150 yards. And he did most of his damage against Patrick Peterson, catching six of seven passes for 96 yards when Peterson was in coverage.
Ryan Fitzpatrick completed 36-of-58 passes for 402 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions and this overtime game. He threw an interception in overtime, but those numbers are fantasytastic, especially against the Cardinals.
