Week 13 Target Watch: AFC

Welcome to the AFC targets and touches for Week 13 of the NFL season. The NFC portion can be found with a click of the clicky thing.

I have all the targets for each player since Week 8, and then in parentheses are the total and then average targets per game played for that player. Then below that I have the Red Zone targets and touches for each player, now sorted for rushing attempts and passing targets from Week 8 on. Jacoby Jones led the way in this one with five targets in which he caught four for 103 yards and a touchdown. The targets were spread out and the defense dominated, so the offense wasn’t asked to do much.

The run game continues to be non-existent with Ray Rice rushing 16 times for 30 yards and Bernard Pierce with 10 carries for 30 yards. The Jets run defense is one of the best in the league, but it’s looking like Ray Rice’s game against Chicago was mostly due to how bad Chicago is at stopping the run.

With Stevie Johnson and Robert Woods out for this game it was the Marquise Goodwin show and he didn’t disappoint catching six of nine targets for 81 yards and a touchdown. His nine targets were much more than the #2 receivers Chris Hogan and T.J. Graham who had four each. Graham made the most of his with two receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown.

The Jets’ rush defense is stout and it showed as C.J. Spiller ran 13 times for six yards and Fred Jackson rushed 12 times for 34 yards. Last season Spiller averaged 3.6 yards after contact and this season he’s averaging 1.8. He’s not the same player.

Andy Dalton completed 13-of-27 passes (48%) for 93 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. I doubt you can find too many three-touchdown games from quarterbacks who only score 11 fantasy points in standard format. His 93 yards are a record low for a player who attempted at least 25 passes and threw three touchdowns in the same game. Mohammed Sanu threw for 25 yards on one attempt; over a fourth of the yardage Dalton could muster.

Giovani Bernard had 30 snaps to BenJarvus Green-Ellis’ 23, but had 14 touches to Green-Ellis’ 16. Bernard outplayed him again though with 86 total yards to his 62.

The Browns were never really in this game, but Josh Gordon led the league in points as he caught 14 of 17 passes for 237 yards and a touchdown. It was done in garbage time, but still was an amazing display of offense.

Jordan Cameron has hit a big slump that we have been blaming on their poor quarterback play, which they for sure have had, but in this game he caught just three of 10 targets for 32 yards and two drops.

The Broncos’ passing game had a tough time dealing with the cold and windy conditions in this one. Peyton Manning didn’t test the elements that often downfield with just 10 passes over 10 yards, completing just four, but he wasn’t helped by his teammates who dropped five passes.

Knowshon Moreno was the star for the Broncos as he rushed 37 times for 224 yards and a touchdown. Those 37 attempts are the most by a running back since the 2008 season. That huge usage ended up hurting Moreno, so might not have been the best idea in hindsight, but it was a great performance.

I stand by my belief that Case Keenum shouldn’t have been pulled the week before, but there is no doubt he’s lost his luster after a hot start. He finished the day completing just 18-of-34 for 169 yards and an interception.

Dennis Johnson saw more looks than Ben Tate in the second half after outplaying him in the running game. Tate finished with seven carries for one yard while Johnson had 13 carries for 74 yards. I don’t think this is a complete changing of the guard, but the situation will probably be of the hot-hand variety going forward.

Andrew Luck hasn’t been playing well of late and this game was no exception as he completed 20-0f-39 for 163 yards, one touchdown and one interception that was returned for a touchdown.

T.Y. Hilton and Coby Fleener led with nine and eight targets while Fleener converted the only touchdown. They weren’t able to do much, but we can be sure they are the two players worth owning in fantasy at the moment for the Colts.

The Colts played from behind in this one, but Trent Richardson led the way with 40 snaps to Donald Brown’s 16. This is curious after Brown has been outplaying Richardson and seeing most of the work in come from behind mode. Richardson wasn’t successful so Brown still should be in the picture in what looks to be an extremely fluid backfield rotation.

After Cecil Shorts complained about his nine targets over the previous two games he led the team with 11 targets, eight receptions and 71 yards in this one. He remains the only player you can somewhat rely on in this passing offense.

This was easily the best game for Maurice Jones-Drew this season as he really got going in the passing game with six receptions for 60 yards to go along with his 14 carries for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Dexter McCluster led the way in targets and receptions, but Donnie Avery had the biggest game with six targets and four receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown. Dwayne Bowe also caught a touchdown pass to go with his five receptions for 51 yards. Alex Smith has had five games with zero touchdown throws this year, but he threw three in this one and totaled 294 yards passing. It’s good to see that he can put up good numbers in a shootout.

Jamaal Charles got back into the end zone twice after going three games without a touchdown, a long drought after scoring in his first seven games. He continues to drop passes, but still sees plenty of targets which is really good news, the second part, not the first.

After a 53-yard touchdown pass to Mike Wallace in the first quarter the Dolphins couldn’t get into the end zone again even though Caleb Sturgis kicked three field goals.

Wallace had his best statistical game of the season and his first touchdown since Week 2 as he caught five of 11 targets for 127 yards and a touchdown. Brian Hartline was an efficient five of five for 78 yards, his most yardage since Week 1.

It’s not often you get a game with three players getting into double digit targets, but once the Patriots fell behind by 24 points and Steven Ridley and LeGarrette Blount both fumbled, the pass was the order of the day. Julian Edelman, Shane Vereen and Rob Gronkowski all hit 10 targets. Edelman was the big winner as he caught nine of 11 targets for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Gronkowski did his usual damage catching seven of ten targets for 90 yards and a touchdown and Shane Vereen has gotten off to a big restart with eight receptions in both of his games after returning. He hasn’t put up huge yardage, but he is a PPR king right now and has the ability to go off at any time.

The Jets are a complete dumpster fire on offense while Geno Smith is “Bad Geno” and that he was once again as he completed 9-of-22 passes for 127 yards and two interceptions. There is very little we can take away from this game other than the Jets need for a competent passer.

Rod Streater was the target leader with nine. He caught five of those for a team-leading 93 yards while Marcel Reece got the only receiving touchdown catching four of five targets for 44 yards and a touchdown.

Rashad Jennings once again led the ground attack as he rushed for 73 yards on 16 carries and also caught four of five targets for 49 yards. He has won the starting job.

After watching Joe Haden completely shut down A.J. Green many were worried that Antonio Brown would meet the same fate, but instead he caught six of ten targets for 92 yards and a touchdown. Emmanuel Sanders also did well catching six of seven targets for 54 yards and a touchdown.

Le'Veon Bell continues to get plenty of work and put up respectable numbers, this time he had 23 carries for 80 yards and two receptions for 18 more. He’s not setting the world on fire, but you can usually count on him.

The Chargers went to town on Kansas City, especially rookie Keenan Allen who caught nine of 12 targets for 124 yards. It’s hard not to see him winning Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Physical freak Ladarius Green had his biggest percentage of snaps on the season with 29-of-72 and tied his high of five targets, which he set last week. But of course his best stats were his three receptions for 80 yards and the first touchdown of his career, a 60 yarder down the seam where he left the whole defensive backfield in the dust.

Kendall Wright has been a PPR machine this season, but had only one touchdown in Week 2 and no games over 100 yards. That changed against Oakland as he caught six of seven targets for 103 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Fitzpatrick is a good fit for Wright who is nearly impossible to cover in small spaces and Fitzpatrick is an accurate passer, but doesn’t have a big arm.

This was also the breakout game for rookie Justin Hunter. Before this game he hadn’t topped 2 receptions or 51 yards, but against the Raiders he caught six of six targets for 109 yards and a touchdown.
