Week 12 Looks/Touches

Matt Buser
Yahoo Sports

The following is a list of the Week 12 leaders in looks and touches. It defines those running backs and receivers who received the most attention this past weekend.

Touches is defined as the number of times a running back carried or caught the football.
Looks is defined as the number of times a player was the intended target of a pass.

TOUCHES

It looked like Shaun Alexander and the Seahawks were trying to make up for lost time, as Alexander carried the ball a career-high 40 times on Monday night. Okay, so it may have had more to do with the sloppy conditions and Matt Hasselbeck's rust in his first game after missing four weeks with a knee injury. Either way, and despite zero receptions, Alexander recorded the second-most touches for a running back in a single week – Larry Johnson had 41 in Week 8 – en route to 201 yards rushing.
Steven Jackson continues to have a very solid season, but has been an absolute beast in points-per-reception leagues. His Week 12 numbers included 192 yards of offense (121 rushing, 71 receiving) on 32 touches (23 carries, nine catches), and he scored his sixth touchdown of the season. Jackson is currently seventh in the league in rushing yards, with 932, passed Brian Westbrook for the league lead in receiving yardage among running backs (553) during his Week 12 performance, and is now second among backs in receptions (63) to Reggie Bush (64).
Peyton Manning attempted just 20 passes against the Eagles while handing the ball off 39 times to Joseph Addai and Dominic Rhodes. Rhodes had a respectable 68 yards on his 15 carries and added 21 receiving yards on three catches, but Addai simply went off. Addai had 171 rushing yards on his 24 carries, including touchdowns of 15, 10, 15, and four yards, and added 37 yards to his stats on two receptions. The numbers for the two backs over the past three weeks: Addai has 389 yards of offense (299 rushing, 90 receiving) on 60 touches (50 carries, 10 receptions) and five scores; Rhodes has 231 yards (170 rushing, 61 receiving) on 47 touches (38 carries, 9 catches) and no touchdowns.
Willie Parker had another one of "those" games. Parker was stuffed early by an ultra-physical Ravens defense, and the Steelers were forced to abandon the run once they fell behind. Parker finished the day with 22 yards on 10 carries and added 15 yards on two receptions. Parker has topped 100 yards rushing in four games this season, and in those four games totaled 570 rushing yards (143 per game) and six touchdowns. In the Steelers' other seven games, Parker totaled 345 rushing yards (49 per game) and three scores.
The platoon watch notes when a team's RB2 is given at least half as many touches as the RB1, regardless of the reason. Platoon watch for Week 12 included: Atlanta (Warrick Dunn 19, Jerious Norwood 15), Buffalo (Willis McGahee 13, Anthony Thomas 7), Dallas (Marion Barber III 18, Julius Jones 11), Detroit (Arlen Harris 10, Aveion Cason 5), Indianapolis (Joseph Addai 26, Dominic Rhodes 18), Jacksonville (Fred Taylor 22, Maurice Jones-Drew 13), Miami (Ronnie Brown 16, Sammy Morris 12), New England (Laurence Maroney 17, Corey Dillon 12), and the New York Jets (Cedric Houston 12, Kevan Barlow 8, Leon Washington 7).
Maurice Jones-Drew topped the yards-per-touch leaderboard for those players with at least 10 touches. Jones-Drew had 125 yards of offense (78 rushing, 47 receiving) on his 13 touches (eight carries, five receptions), good for a 9.62-yard average. Cedric Houston came in on the low end of the spectrum, totaling 18 yards (13 rushing, five receiving) on his 12 touches (11 carries, one catch), just a 1.50-yard average.

LOOKS

Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin finished one-two at the top of the looks leaderboard, something that many draft day hopes were pinned on happening more than just once through the season's first 12 weeks. The two combined for 20 catches on 31 looks, 312 receiving yards, and one touchdown. Matt Leinart had season highs of 51 pass attempts, 31 completions, and 405 yards passing on the day. One unfortunate side-effect of the aerial display – Edgerrin James had a season-low four carries and 15 rushing yards.
A bit more surprising was that Andre Johnson and Eric Moulds finished two-five on the looks leaderboard as David Carr had season-highs of 54 pass attempts, 39 completions, and 321 yards passing. Johnson is tops in the league in total looks (129), looks per game (11.7), and receptions (84, 16 more than the second-highest total), and has been a target of at least nine passes in every game since the second week of the season. Moulds recorded season-highs for looks (13), receptions (10), and receiving yards (79) in the game.
And now back to not-so-surprising news. Ashley Lelie had the biggest 0-fer of the week, as he was targeted five times but recorded no receptions. Lelie has 18 catches on 47 looks this season, and his 38 percent reception rate is the lowest in the league among players with at least four looks per game. Steven Jackson is tops in the league in that department, as he has 63 receptions on 76 looks, an 83 percent catch rate. Moulds is tops among qualifying wideouts with 49 receptions on 63 looks, a 78 percent catch rate. And among tight ends, Kellen Winslow leads the way with 66 catches on 85 looks, also a 78 percent reception rate.
