Week 11 Target Watch: AFC

Preseason predictions can be hit or miss. In this week�s Roundtable, the guys reflect on some of their misses

Welcome to the AFC targets and touches for Week 11 of the NFL season. The NFC portion is magically HERE.

I have all the targets for each player since Week 6, and then in parentheses I have the average targets per game played for that player. Then below that I have the Red Zone targets and touches for each player. It’s as easy as following me on Twitter.

Below I have the leaders in rushing attempts for quarterbacks inside the red zone. You can see the usual suspects here. I tried looking at quarterback’s rushing attempts inside the opponent’s five-yard line, but there really weren’t enough to be worth mentioning. The days of Cam Newton as a goal line back seem to be over.

This game was difficult to watch with both quarterbacks playing poorly. Joe Flacco attempted seven passes over 15 yards and didn’t connect on any. The wind didn’t help, but Flacco has attempted 40 passes over 20 yards this season and not had one touchdown on any of them. The deep ball is supposed to be his strength, but not this season.

Torrey Smith saw the most targets with 14, which is good since he was only able to come up with five of them for 46 yards and a touchdown.  As long as he’s getting the lion’s share of the targets he’s got plenty of upside.

Ray Rice has hit the bottom of the fantasy barrel. He rushed eight times for 30 yards and thankfully for PPR’ers he caught six passes for 26 yards. He’s slowed down some and the offensive line is not worth its weight in used car batteries, so the near future is not looking bright for Rice. His longest run for the season is 14 yards.

E.J. Manuel was held down all game by the Steelers’ defense as he completed 22-of-39 passes for just 155 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was just 7-of-16 for 92 yards and an interception on passes over five yards.

Stevie Johnson had 10 targets, but only caught three for 48 yards before leaving the game with a groin injury. The second target leader was backup tight end Chris Gragg who caught four of six targets for 25 yards and a garbage-time touchdown. As you can tell, Manuel was throwing a lot of short passes that ended up going nowhere.

The running game was bottled up as well, even though they probably should have tried a bit more than they did. Fred Jackson led the way with 44 snaps to C.J. Spiller’s 22.

Giovani Bernard had 14 carries for 58 yards and caught all eight of his targets for 37 yards and a touchdown. His 22 touches are his most on the season and his 67% of the snaps are his second most. He sees more work when games are close or when they are behind due to his work in the passing game and thankfully for his fantasy owners the key losses in the Bengals’ defense may actually help him see more work.

Andy Dalton had another poor game after having three great games Weeks 6-8. A.J. Green put up a great line of eight receptions for 151 yards and a touchdown, but the touchdown was a fluky 51-yard Hail Mary that bounced into his arms like manna from heaven.

This was the week for two Browns’ receivers not named Jordan Cameron and Josh Gordon to shine. Both Davone Bess and Greg Little have had awful seasons with drops and poor play, but both showed up against the Ravens. Little didn’t have any drops and caught seven of nine targets for 122 yards and Bess had three of four receptions for just 24 yards, but two touchdowns. Jason Campbell did a good job (for his real team) of spreading the ball around and it helped them get a win.

The running game is nowhere at this point and that is displayed by Willis McGahee’s 21 attempts for 31 yards. The offensive line isn’t helping, but neither are McGahee’s old legs.

Peyton Manning did a Peyton Manning on the Chargers and put up a quick four touchdowns, three of them to Demaryius Thomas and one to Julius Thomas. This is the way of the Broncos’ offense. Fantasy players can’t worry about their Broncos’ receivers on a weekly basis. You start them and then look at how amazing they were at the end of the season. Eric Decker has been the odd man out this season, but is still a top 20 receiver and easily could have a few breakout games moving forward.

The buzz was that Knowshon Moreno would be losing carries to Montee Ball to keep him fresh for a playoff run, but that didn’t materialize this week with 23 touches (eight of those receptions) for 114 yards. Ball finished the game with five attempts for 20 yards.

Case Keenum thankfully doesn’t face defenses like Arizona going forward, but with the help of Andre Johnson he was still able to throw three touchdowns in a losing effort. Johnson is averaging 12.5 targets in the last two games and has totaled 14 receptions for 266 yards and five touchdowns. Of course only 37 of those yards came in this game, but two of the touchdowns did because Keenum is young and knows Johnson is his best shot in the end zone. And the two catches he made for touchdowns were hall of fame receptions.

Keenum also targeted DeAndre Hopkins 11 times, which he caught six of for 69 yards. With the schedule the Texans have going forward, both Hopkins and Johnson could coexist in fantasyland if Keenum is allowed to air it out like he has been.

The Colts were down 28-0 by halftime and that was all she wrote. Andrew Luck tried to throw his way out of it, but he was off target much of the game throwing three interceptions and fumbling early. T.Y. Hilton was the main benefactor of the high volume of passes due to the deficit as he caught seven of eight targets for 130 yards. Tight end Coby Fleener led the team with 10 targets, but only caught four for 33 yards. The only touchdown came on a Donald Brown reception.

If you look at the offensive numbers in this one you’d expect the Jaguars would have lost in easy fashion, but their defense made some key plays that set them up with short fields and even returned one turnover for a touchdown. Chad Henne completed 14-of- 23 passes for 180 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions and their two leading receivers had two receptions on four targets each for 42 and 40 yards. Those were Cecil Shorts and Mike Brown, both of whom should be reaping the benefits of garbage time, but instead the Jaguars had to go and play good defense!

Alex Smith only completed one pass that traveled over 10 yards in the air against the Bills, a 20 yarder to Anthony Fasano. UDFA rookie Case Keenum completed 14 for 314 yards and three touchdowns!  They are hiding Smith and letting their defense win games, but they won’t be facing Jeff Tuel each week.

Smith completed 19-of-29 passes for 124 yards for no touchdowns or interceptions. The only touchdowns Kansas City had were defensive.
Jamaal Charles now has had back-to-back games without a touchdown after having one or more in each of his previous games. Kansas City is becoming so predictable that even one of the best running backs in the league is going to have some trouble unfortunately.

The Dolphins running backs carried the ball 11 times for zero yards in this one. That’s an average of 0.0 yards per carry. So if they had carried the ball 100 times, that would extrapolate out to zero yards rushing. This comes after Lamar Miller had rushed for 194 yards over the last two games. Maybe losing two linemen had something to do with all that.

The star for the Dolphins was Rishard Matthews. With Darrelle Revis taking Mike Wallace out of the game Matthews led the team with 14 targets in which he caught 11 for 120 yards and two touchdowns.

Aaron Dobson leads the team in targets over the last five games and had his biggest game as a rookie this week as he caught five of nine targets for 130 yards and two touchdowns. He of course wasn’t the only player to have a big game. Rob Gronkowski was unstoppable, as he caught nine of 10 targets for 143 yards and a touchdown. The other big receiving game came from Danny Amendola who was only targeted four times, but caught each one and finished with 122 yards and a touchdown. He is not Julian Edelman.

Stevan Ridley managed to stay out of the doghouse after fumbling and rushed 26 times for 115 yards and two touchdowns. There were plenty of fantasy points for the taking in this one. The return of a full speed Rob Gronkowski showed its full effect this week and it’s a good sign for the Patriots going forward.

There wasn’t much passing from Geno and The Jets in this one. He completed just eight passes on 15 attempts for 115 yards. It was easily his fewest completions, attempts and yards on the season, but they still beat the Saints through defense and the run game.

Chris Ivory played very well against his old team running for 139 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. They weren’t going to let Smith beat them with mistakes and it worked.

Terrelle Pryor has turned back into that guy everyone thought he would be. Over his last four games he’s averaging 15-of-30 passing for 178.5 yards for a total of one touchdown and eight interceptions including 18 sacks. His rushing yards are buoyed by his 97 yard touchdown run against the Steelers, but his knee was hurting as he went into this last game and it wasn’t feeling any better after getting sacked four times.

Denarius Moore led the team with nine targets, but only caught three for 45 yards. The real winner for the Raiders in this one was Rashad Jennings who had 22 touches for 107 yards.

The Steelers got back to their defense and run oriented game plan and easily took care of the rookie-led Buffalo Bills. That game plan is going to be more effective against E.J. Manuel than Tom Brady. Le’Veon Bell ran the ball 22 times for just 57 yards and one touchdown, but also caught three passes for 39 yards. Bell isn’t Danny Woodhead in the passing game, but his use as the every down back is a nice asset in fantasy.

Antonio Brown once again led the way in the receiving game with six receptions on ten targets for 104 yards. His 67 receptions lead the league. He has yet to dip below five receptions this season.

Philip Rivers had his lowest yardage output since Week 3, but still spread the ball around like he usually does. That left the fantasy players wanting in fantasy points. Antonio Gates led the way with targets (8) and yards (62), which shows you how limited the numbers were.

Ryan Mathews got a rare goal line rushing attempt and scored, while Danny Woodhead got a quite common red zone look and also scored. The way the Chargers have been using Mathews has been so intermittent that it is difficult to know when or if he’ll do anything. At least for the most part we can rely on Woodhead getting receptions, even though this game produced the least number of receiving yards for him since Week 1.

The Titans lost Jake Locker, but Ryan Fitzpatrick came in and performed well in relief completing 22-of-33 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns as well as a rushing touchdown, his second of the season. With the way Jake Locker had been playing the last two games it’s not unreasonable to say Fitzpatrick could give them a better shot at winning some games.

Kendall Wright remains a PPR asset with seven receptions for 78 yards in this game on a team-high nine targets. Delanie Walker also stepped up with a nice game catching four of eight targets for 62 yards and one touchdown.

Chris Johnson disappointed after putting together a stellar game the week before. He fumbled, dropped a pass, and rushed 12 times for 30 yards. He helped his cause with five receptions on seven targets for 43 yards though. If not for his fumble and a Locker interception the Titans most likely would have won this one.
