Webb on ready alert if Vikings call

Joe Webb has experienced some high highs and also gone weeks, even months without being heard from. In short, he lives the life of an NFL backup serving behind a young, supposedly franchise quarterback.

But questions have emerged about the legitimacy of Christian Ponder’s long-term standing with the Vikings, and with the team still in the hunt for a playoff berth, Webb’s name has reemerged from the fog.

In short, many have wondered why Webb, who only has seen mop-up duty in a 30-7 victory over the Titans this season, hasn’t seen the field more. He was used (mostly without avail) in the team’s “Blazer” package as a change-of-pace running option last season but rose from the ashes to rally the team against the Lions (a dramatic loss) and Redskins (a win) after Ponder went down. In short, Webb has shown to be a spark, even coming off the bench cold, which makes him a valuable part.

Could Webb be an option to replace Ponder, perhaps full time if Ponder continues to struggle, this season? The answer we keep hearing right now is no, but it’s hardly written in stone. If Adrian Peterson somehow can carry the Vikings to wins and Ponder continues to struggle, it would not be stunning to see Webb inserted, either temporarily or as a starter.

But what that would do is undermine Ponder’s standing as the team’s starter and likely open up questions all offseason that the former No. 12 pick in the draft would have to face. This is a tricky time for the Vikings, who are riding the line between contending and rebuilding and need to see more production from their QB position.
