TORONTO – One of the better broadcast innovations for the World Cup of Hockey has been the ‘ref cam’ that has rested on the helmet of one of the officials for each game.

This has given us some phenomenal on-ice views of players at ice level.

NHL.com compiled some of the best ref cam shots from Russia’s 4-3 victory over Team North America. They include some incredible shots of both Russia and North America controlling the offensive zone from ice level.

And here is the best of ref cam from the opening weekend.

So far the tournament has been littered with dynamic videos from ref cam – many of which have included Team North America superstar Connor McDavid. Here is a shot of McDavid feeding Auston Matthews on his squad’s first goal against Russia on Monday.

Here is the hit by Team Finland forward Leo Komarov on North America defenseman Aaron Ekblad that likely knocked Ekblad out of the tournament with an upper body injury.

One of the more interesting ref cam shots that didn’t include a skill play. It was Alex Ovechkin arguing after his game-tying goal was disallowed in Russia’s tournament opener against Sweden.

The NHL is using several technological innovations this tournament, including player tracking, which gives all sorts of data on players such as on-ice speed. So far they’ve been a success. Could they be coming to a league rink near you at some point in the future?
