Landon Donovan is already one of the most important figures in United States soccer history. He scored memorable goals at the 2002 and 2010 World Cups. He’s the national team’s all-time leading goal-scorer and its most decorated player. For years, he was the face of Major League Soccer.

Donovan is already looking to further his legacy in the game. He’s going to start the process of acquiring his coaching licenses in August.

Donovan, it seems, is also thinking about an alternative method of literally producing the next American star.

Here’s Landon juggling a soccer ball while carrying 6-month-old son Talon, with the caption, “Preparations for World Cup 2038 are underway”:

The most popular comment on Donovan’s post: “Are you going to coach him like when you eventually coach the US team? By the way, if you can hurry up and do that we would all appreciate it.”

The second-most popular comment: “Word just came in that he’s already been cut by [Klinsmann].”

Anyway …

There are plenty of things that could stop baby Landon from playing in the 2038 World Cup. Russia and Qatar could permanently tarnish the event. Robots could take over soccer. The planet could disintegrate due to global warning. FIFA could combust into the steaming pile of manure that it basically already is.

Alternatively, the U.S. could become so dominant that the rest of the world could give up on the sport altogether.

But if there is in fact a 2038 World Cup, and if young Talon hasn’t been automatically cut by coach-for-life Jurgen Klinsmann, it’s basically indisputable that Landon’s son will lead the Americans to glory.
