Kevin Brown tells us that Antoine Roussel is the new Steve Downie

I’m a huge fan of Antoine Roussel as far as fantasy hockey is concerned.

He burst onto the NHL scene last season with seven goals and 14 points in 39 games to go with 85 penalty minutes but received little regard going into this season in traditional pools.

Well he has picked up where he left off last season with five goals and 10 points with 70 penalty minutes in just 27 games. He has been particularly hot of late with four goals and seven points in his last 10 games and a plus-four rating with 18 penalty minutes.

The strange thing is that is he owned in only 3 percent of all Yahoo! pools. I understand him not being owned in shallow pools and pools that do not use penalty minutes as a category but in all other pools, he should be owned.

Check him out!

It’s still not too late to join a Yahoo! pool.

INJURIES

Henrik Zetterberg is out at least two weeks with a herniated disc. (Click here to see the rest of the injury list.)

ANAHEIM

Games this week

vs. New York Islanders, vs. Minnesota, vs. Edmonton

Rested team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Mathieu Perreault could return this week as he is scheduled to miss a couple of weekend games with a lower body injury. Ryan Getzlaf is on an 11 game scoring streak in which he has nine goals and 17 points. Getzlaf has 32 points and is teaming up nicely with Corey Perry, who has 31. The Ducks are hurting on the blueline with Sheldon Souray, Luca Sbisa and Francois Beauchemin out of the lineup but the injuries are giving youngsters like Hampus Lindholm and Alex Grant a chance to play. Dustin Penner continues to be one of the best surprises of the season with nine goals, 22 points and a plus-17 rating in 23 games.

BOSTON

Games this week

@ Calgary, @ Edmonton, @ Vancouver

Rested team: @ Vancouver (Saturday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

Tuukka Rask continues to be one of the top netminders in the NHL with a 14-7-2 record to go with a 1.90 GAA and a .934 save percentage. Chad Johnson has played very well as the backup with a 4-1-0 record as well as a 1.97 GAA to give the Bruins the best netminding in the NHL. Jarome Iginla one behind Dennis Seidenberg in the plus/minus category at plus-10. Coach Claude Julien is pleased with the play of sophomore defenseman Dougie Hamilton who has three goals, seven points and a plus-eight rating. Reilly Smith is third on the team in points with 17, behind David Krejci and Milan Lucic as both have 21 points.

BUFFALO

Games this week

vs. Ottawa, @ Ottawa, vs. Calgary

Rested team: vs. Ottawa (Tuesday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Sabres play a home-and-home series against the Senators this week so look for John Scott, Steve Ott and Cody McCormick to add to their penalty minute totals if there are fisticuffs. Drew Stafford continues to slump with two goals and nine points in 28 games and just two assists in his last seven games. Ville Leino has yet to find the back of the net in 16 games. Marcus Foligno has been held pointless in his last six games and as a result coach Ted Nolan has cut back on his ice time.

CALGARY

Games this week

vs. Boston, vs. Carolina, @ Buffalo, @ New York Rangers

Rested team: None

Tired Team: @ New York Rangers (Sunday)

Notes

The Flames play three games in four nights so expect to see Karri Ramo in goal in place of Reto Berra at least once. Ramo has won his last two starts and is now the number one netminder, at least this week. The Flames got a big boost this past week with the return of offensive defenseman Mark Giordano to the lineup as he missed over six weeks with a broken ankle. He scored once and added an assist in his return and now has three goals and 11 points in nine games. Sean Monahan will stay with the Flames and not play for Team Canada at the World U20 Championships as the Flames think it’s best that he remains in the NHL. He is currently out with a broken foot.

CAROLINA

Games this week

@ Vancouver, @ Edmonton, @ Calgary, @ Phoenix

Rested team: @ Vancouver (Monday)

Tired Team: @ Edmonton (Tuesday)

Notes

The Hurricanes play three games in four nights so expect to see Justin Peters once instead of Cam Ward. Alexander Semin is hoping to play this week as he has missed the last nine games with a concussion. Eric Staal has been on fire of late with three goals and 13 points in his last 11 games. Elias Lindholm could play for Sweden at the 2014 U20 Championships but the Hurricanes have not yet given him permission to go. Jeff Skinner has 17 points in 18 games this season and leads the team in plus/minus at plus-seven, one ahead Radek Dvorak.

CHICAGO

Games this week

@ Dallas, vs. Philadelphia, @ Toronto, vs. Los Angeles

Rested team: None

Tired Team: vs. Philadelphia (Wednesday)

Notes

Andrew Shaw missed Thursday’s game with an upper body injury but is expected to play this week. Jeremy Morin was recalled on Wednesday from the minors due to the injury to Shaw and the illness of Michal Handzus. Morin had six goals and 12 points in 13 AHL games this season. Patrick Kane was the first star for the month of November with nine goals and 19 points and now has 32 points in 29 games heading into action on Thursday. Marian Hossa leads the Blackhawks with a plus-15 rating, two ahead of underrated blueliner Brent Seabrook and Brandon Saad.

COLORADO

Games this week

vs. Phoenix, @ Winnipeg, vs. Minnesota

Rested team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Look for Alex Tanguay to return to action this week from a knee injury. Matt Duchene has only one assist since he returned from an oblique muscle injury four games ago but in his defense, he has been under the weather. Rookie Nathan MacKinnon has had a good start to his NHL career with five goals and 16 points in 26 games. Andre Benoit leads all Colorado defensemen with 11 points this season with Jan Hejda just two points behind. Hejda is tied with a plus-17 alongside Erik Johnson. Jean-Sebastien Giguere is a perfect 6-0-0 this season with a 1.62 GAA and a .949 save percentage.

COLUMBUS

Games this week

@ Pittsburgh, vs. New Jersey, @ New York Rangers, vs. St. Louis

Rested team: None

Tired Team: vs. New Jersey (Tuesday)

Notes

The Blue Jackets play three times in four nights and with Sergei Bobrovsky on the sidelines for the next four-five weeks, Curtis McElhinney will start the majority of the games with Mike McKenna likely seeing action in one game this week. Brandon Dubinsky returned from a foot injury this past week after missing six games and played between Matt Calvert and Blake Comeau. Jack Johnson is having a terrible season with only two goals, five points and a minus-13 rating in 28 games. Ryan Johansen has taken over the team lead in points with 20, two ahead of James Wisniewski.

DALLAS

Games this week

vs. Chicago, @ Nashville, @ Winnipeg

Rested team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Tyler Seguin returned to action on Thursday after missing two games with a concussion. Antoine Roussel continues to impress as he now has five goals and 10 points with 70 penalty minutes in 27 games. Valeri Nichushkin has three points in his last two games and his offensive ability is obvious to anyone who watches the rookie play. He is worth trading for in keeper leagues. Jamie Benn leads the Stars with 25 points. Kari Lehtonen continues to sparkle with a 11-5-5 record to go with a 2.25 GAA and a .926 save percentage.

DETROIT

Games this week

@ Florida, @ Tampa Bay, vs. Pittsburgh, vs. Tampa Bay

Rested team: vs. Pittsburgh (Saturday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Red Wings play four times this week including three games in four nights and Jonas Gustavsson should split the starts with Jimmy Howard. Todd Bertuzzi is ready to return from a shoulder ailment after missing the last five games. The Red Wings lost Henrik Zetterberg to injury for at least a couple of weeks with a herniated disc and with Pavel Datsyuk still out of the lineup, Stephen Weiss centered the top line this week between Johan Franzen and Gustav Nyquist. Dan DeKeyser practiced for the first time since separating his shoulder on November 19th but he is not eligible to play until December 14th at the earliest as he is on long term injured reserve.

EDMONTON

Games this week

vs. Carolina, vs. Boston, @Vancouver, @ Anaheim

Rested team: Carolina (Tuesday)

Tired Team: @ Vancouver (Friday)

Notes

The Oilers play three games in four nights so look for Jason LaBarbera to play once in place of Devan Dubnyk. LaBarbera was recalled when Ilya Bryzgalov was injured in a collision with the Stars Ryan Garbutt and is currently out of action with concussion-like symptoms. The Oilers made a bunch of moves on Wednesday when they sent Will Acton and Denis Grebeshkov to the minors while recalling Anton Lander and Corey Potter. Nail Yakupov has only four goals and nine points with a minus-17 rating in 28 games. Justin Schultz continues to struggle defensively as he is a minus-nine in 22 games with 11 points.

FLORIDA

Games this week

vs. Detroit, vs. Washington, @ Montreal

Rested team: @ Montreal (Sunday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

There are trade rumors swirling around Dmitry Kulikov as he is eligible to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season and there is some thought that he could return to his native Russia. Tomas Kopecky returned to the Florida lineup on Thursday. A couple of scoring droughts were ended this past week as Tomas Fleischmann had an assist on Tuesday, his first point in 10 games while Jonathan Huberdeau halted a six game pointless streak on November 30th. Tim Thomas picked up his first win in four games on Thursday and is now 7-10-1.

LOS ANGELES

Games this week

@ Montreal, @ Toronto, @ Ottawa, @ Chicago

Rested team: None

Tired Team: @ Toronto (Wednesday)

Notes

The Kings play all four on the road including three games in four nights so look for Martin Jones to get a start in place of Ben Scrivens. Dustin Brown scored on Tuesday to end a six-game scoring slump and perhaps he is ready to start a hot streak. Jeff Carter has five points in five games since his return from a foot injury and Justin Williams has lost power play time because of his return. Tyler Toffoli has played well since his recall as he now has six goals and 11 points in 15 games. Martin Jones saw his first action of the season on Tuesday and stopped 26 shots in regulation and all nine shots in the shootout to garner the win.

MINNESOTA

Games this week

@ Anaheim, @ San Jose, @ Colorado

Rested team: None

Tired Team: @ San Jose  (Thursday)

Notes

The Wild play three games in four nights so expect to see Niklas Backstrom play once with Josh Harding getting the start in the other two games as the Wild are on the road for all three games. Harding was the third star of the month in the NHL in November. Mikael Granlund is out of action with a concussion and has been shut down as he is not making any progress according to coach Mike Yeo. Jason Pominville is not happy with the production of the top line of late which includes himself, Mikko Koivu and Zach Parise. Look for the Wild to loan Mathew Dumba to Team Canada for the World U20 Championships in Malmo, Sweden over the Christmas holidays. It will be good for Dumba as he has been sitting in the press box for the last six games and could use some playing time.

MONTREAL

Games this week

vs. Los Angeles, @ Philadelphia, @ New York Islanders, vs. Florida

Rested team: @ Philadelphia (Thursday)

Tired Team: vs. Florida (Sunday)

Notes

The Canadiens play three games in four nights so look for Peter Budaj to play once as Carey Price gets a night off. Rene Bourque has six goals and seven points in 23 games but has missed the last two contests with a lower body injury after missing five games last month with a groin injury. David Desharnais has three goals and nine points in his last nine games and deserves to be looked at in deeper pools. P.K. Subban leads the Habs with 24 points and is plus-11 with 29 penalty minutes and 12 power play points as he is the top fantasy defenseman in the NHL. Max Pacioretty leads Montreal with 11 goals but has only three assists in 21 games.

NASHVILLE

Games this week

@ New York Rangers, vs. Dallas, vs. San Jose

Rested team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

There was a dent in the armor of Marek Mazanec on Thursday as he gave up four goals on 13 shots in two periods. It was his first bad outing in 11 games as he gave up four goals in two periods on November 15 to Pittsburgh on 25 shots. He is 5-6-1 this season with a 2.31 GAA and a .922 save percentage. He was named the NHL’s rookie of the month for November. Shea Weber has missed the last three games with an eye injury and his return is not imminent at this time. Patric Hornqvist has two assists in three games since returning from an upper body injury and a surprising six penalty minutes, giving him 16 in 26 games to go with six goals and 15 points.

NEW JERSEY

Games this week

@ Columbus, @ Pittsburgh, vs. Tampa Bay

Rested team: @ Columbus (Tuesday)

Tired Team: vs. Tampa Bay (Saturday)

Notes

Damien Brunner continues to lose ice time as he has only one assist in his last 16 games. Cory Schneider has played in three of the Devils last four games as he slowly seems to be taking over as New Jersey’s number one goaltender in place of the veteran Martin Brodeur. Jaromir Jagr is 41 years of age and will turn 42 in February but you would never know by his age that he has been the Devils top offensive producer with 11 goals and 22 points to lead New Jersey in both categories. In fact, he has seven more points than Patrik Elias, who is second on the Devils. Eric Gelinas has 11 points in 20 games and seems to be taking over as the Devils top offensive defenseman.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Games this week

@ Anaheim, @ San Jose, @ Phoenix, vs. Montreal

Rested team: None

Tired Team: @ San Jose (Tuesday)

Notes

The Islanders play three games in four nights so look for Anders Nilsson to play at least once in place of Kevin Poulin. Nilsson has played in the last three games for the slumping Islanders but is 0-1-2 with a 3.26 GAA and a .883 save percentage this season. Evgeni Nabokov practiced on Wednesday and is hopeful of returning this week but don’t count on it in weekly transaction pools. After going pointless in six games, Frans Nielsen finally picked up an assist on Thursday. He still has 10 goals and 23 points in 29 games but his days in the top ten of scoring are over. Kyle Okposo has passed him in scoring and is second on the Islanders with 26, six behind John Tavares.

NEW YORK RANGERS

Games this week

vs. Nashville, vs. Columbus, vs. Calgary

Rested team: vs. Calgary (Sunday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

Henrik Lundqvist has signed a seven year extension with the Rangers that should ensure he will finish his career with New York and he will receive $59.5 million over the length of the contract that kicks in next season. Look for Lundqvist to play a little more often now with Cameron Talbot getting in three times out of every 10 games, although it may change after the Olympic break if Lundqvist and Sweden make the medal round. Brad Richards is on a five game scoring streak in which he has two goals and six points, giving him 22 points in 29 games this season. Michael Del Zotto has played in the last three games after being a healthy scratch the previous two.

OTTAWA

Games this week

vs. Philadelphia, @ Buffalo, vs. Buffalo, vs. Los Angeles

Rested team: @ Buffalo (Tuesday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Senators play three games in four nights as part of a four game week so look for Robin Lehner and Craig Anderson to share the net. Erik Karlsson leads all defensemen in points with 27. Joe Corvo seems to have worked himself back into the Ottawa lineup as the blueliner has played 21:13 and 18:09 minutes his last two games with three points in his last five games after being a healthy scratch in 11 of the previous 12 games. The Senators are only 4-8-2 at home this season. Milan Michalek is a team worse minus-13 this year and has only four goals in 29 games.

PHILADELPHIA

Games this week

@ Ottawa, @ Chicago, vs. Montreal, @ Washington

Rested team: @ Chicago (Wednesday)

Tired Team: vs. Montreal (Thursday)

Notes

The Flyers play three games in four nights so look for Ray Emery to play once instead of Steve Mason. Mason has been great this season for the Flyers and is hoping to re-sign with the team as he is a restricted free agent at the end of the season. Negotiations can start on January 1. Sean Couturier has only five goals and 14 points in 28 games this season but has been red-hot of late with all five goals and 10 points in his last nine games. He is plus-10 this season as well as plus-10 over his last nine. Vincent Lecavalier has missed the last two games with back spasms. Andrej Meszaros has played in the last four games after missing the previous nine as a healthy scratch.

PHOENIX

Games this week

@ Colorado, vs. New York Islanders, vs. Carolina

Rested team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Shane Doan is scoring at a pace that will get him over 70 points and if it happens, it will be only the third time he has reached the mark in his 18 year career. He has 23 points in 27 games thus far. Lauri Korpikoski has missed the last seven games with an upper body injury but hopes to return this week. Martin Hanzal continues to have a career year as he has eight goals and 22 points in 25 games. His best offensive season was in his rookie year of 2007-08 when he had 35 points as a 20-year-old. The Coyotes have four players with more than 20 points as Radim Vrbata, Doan, Hanzal and Mike Ribeiro have reached the mark. Oliver Ekman-Larsson is right behind with 19 points.

PITTSBURGH

Games this week

vs. Columbus, vs. New Jersey, @ Detroit

Rested team: None

Tired Team: @ Detroit (Saturday)

Notes

Marc-Andre Fleury continues to show why he should be on Team Canada at the Olympics as he is now 16-7-1 this season with a 2.01 GAA and a .922 save percentage. A lot of people thought the Penguins were in trouble when Tomas Vokoun was stricken with a blood clot problem in training camp (I was one of them) but Fleury has proven his detractors wrong thus far. Vokoun’s NHL career is up in the air at this time and will let his doctors determine if he can return to action. Evgeni Malkin has been sensational of late and he was named the NHL’s second star of the month in November. He missed Thursday’s game due to a lower body injury suffered during the morning skate. Sidney Crosby played in his 500th NHL game on Tuesday and had 253 goals and 706 points at that time. He is plus-110 in his career.

ST. LOUIS

Games this week

@ Winnipeg, vs. Toronto, @ Columbus

Rested team: None

Tired Team: vs. Toronto (Thursday)

Notes

Maxim Lapierre will try and replace the injured Ryan Reaves on the fourth line. Reaves was injured on November 23 as he suffered a broken hand and will be re-evaluated in another four weeks to determine his return date. David Backes is having a career year as he is contributing in all traditional categories. He has 13 goals and 26 points in 27 games with a plus-10 rating and 54 penalty minutes. In addition, he has six power play goals and nine power play points which puts him as a top-ten fantasy skater this season. Jaroslav Halak continues to excel in net as he is now 15-4-2 this season with a 2.11 GAA and a .915 save percentage.  He has left Brian Elliott in his dust as Elliott has played in only eight games this season with only six starts.

SAN JOSE

Games this week

vs. New York Islanders, vs. Minnesota, @ Nashville

Rested team: vs. New York Islanders (Tuesday), vs. Minnesota (Thursday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

Joe Thornton is on a seven game scoring streak with three goals and nine points as he has five goals and 31 points in 28 games this season. He is also plus-10. Brent Burns has been hot since his return from a mouth injury on November 21 as he has four goals and seven points in seven games. Logan Couture has ten goals and 28 points this season to go with a plus-10 rating as he is second in scoring on the Sharks, two ahead of Patrick Marleau. Andrew Desjardins leads San Jose in penalty minutes with 42, four ahead of Mike Brown. Alex Stalock is a perfect 3-0 in starts this season in relief of Antti Niemi.

TAMPA BAY

Games this week

@ Washington, vs. Detroit, @ New Jersey, @ Detroit

Rested team: @ New Jersey (Saturday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Lightning play four times this week including three games in four nights so expect to see Anders Lindback play at least once with Ben Bishop getting the rest of the starts. They play Detroit twice this week so look for Radko Gudas to pick up some minutes. Eric Brewer is skating but has missed the last two games with a lower body injury. Ondrej Palat is getting time on the wing with Martin St. Louis and responded with a couple of assists on Thursday. Ben Bishop has continued his terrific play this season as he is now 15-5-1 with a 1.98 GAA and a .934 save percentage.

TORONTO

Games this week

vs. Los Angeles, @ St. Louis, vs. Chicago

Rested team: vs. Los Angeles (Wednesday)

Tired Team: @ St. Louis (Thursday)

Notes

The Maple Leafs play three games in four nights so look for Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer to play once each and have coach Randy Carlyle make the decision as to who faces the Blackhawks. Here’s a big surprise. Joffrey Lupul is injured again. There is no timetable for his return at this time as he is out with a groin injury. Jonathan Bernier was outstanding on Thursday as the Maple Leafs won 3-2 in overtime despite being outshot 50-24. It was hard to believe but all three stars of the game were from Toronto. Phil Kessel is warming up again as he is on a five game scoring streak and has three goals and six points in that span. Kessel is now up to 15 goals and 27 points this season. Lots of people are critical of his physical condition but he has not missed a game in over four seasons and has not missed a game since November 30, 2009,  a span of 311 games.

VANCOUVER

Games this week

vs. Carolina, vs. Edmonton, vs. Boston

Rested team: vs. Edmonton (Friday)

Tired Team: vs. Carolina (Monday), vs. Boston (Saturday)

Notes

Alexander Edler is out indefinitely with a lower body injury that appears to be a knee injury. Andrew Alberts will draw back into the Vancouver lineup with the injury to Edler. Roberto Luongo is now 12-8-5 this season with a 2.35 GAA and a .914 save percentage. Alex Burrows is out a month with a broken jaw. He will not be missed by fantasy owners as he is having a horrible season with only three assists in 17 games with a minus-seven rating. Tom Sestito leads the Canucks with 77 penalty minutes. After a very quick start, Mike Santorelli is still fourth in points on the Canucks with 18, trailing only the Sedin twins and Ryan Kesler.

WASHINGTON

Games this week

vs. Tampa Bay, @ Florida, vs. Philadelphia

Rested team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Mike Green finally scored his first goal of the season on Tuesday. He had 10 goals and 19 points in his last 18 games last season and it was thought he was back to his form of a few seasons ago when he was the best offensive defenseman in the NHL but it appears those days are behind him. Brooks Laich is another Capital who seems to have lost it as he has only four goals and six points in 25 games this season after seasons of 53, 59, 48 and 41 in the four years before last year’s lockout. Tom Wilson will not be loaned to Team Canada for the World U20 Championships. Michal Neuvirth was placed on the injured reserve list with a leg injury after he stepped on a puck in a pregame warmup. Philipp Grubauer will backup Braden Holtby until Neuvirth is able to return.

WINNIPEG

Games this week

vs. St. Louis, vs. Colorado, vs. Dallas

Rested team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Zach Bogosian has begun some light skating as he attempts to return from a groin injury that has sidelined him since November 15. He could return this week.   Evander Kane has missed the last two games with a lower body injury. He has seven goals and 14 points with a minus-two rating in 26 games this season, far below expectations. Devin Setoguchi has three goals and four points in his last five games while John Albert scored his first goal in his NHL debut and it was on his first shot. Dustin Byfuglien is second in points on the Jets to Bryan Little but Byfuglien loses some value with a minus-11 rating.
