A Copa Libertadores match was interrupted by the appearance of an excited dog who surprised players, commentators and the audience by joining the match.

The international match was between Mexican club Pumas and the Venezuelan team Tachira in their home stadium of Pueblo Nuevo, located in the city of San Cristobal, in the western Venezuelan state of Tachira.

However despite the teams’ efforts, it wasn’t fancy footwork that stole the show, but the appearance of an enthusiastic white dog, which ran onto the pitch.

The images show the dog jumping up to the players, spinning in circles and running around the pitch, to the delight of the commentators.

One of them can be heard saying: "The ref has blown the whistle, because a dog entered onto the pitch, can you believe it!"

Another commented: "Look what we have here, this is crazy, the dog has run onto the pitch, how adorable, looking at him wagging his tail, he definitely looks happy."

The goalkeeper of the Mexican team, Marco Palacios, can be seen trying to stroke the dog, who playfully dodges him and carries on jumping gleefully around the pitch.

The canine is finally caught and can be seen in the arms of Pumas defender Gerardo Alcoba who runs off the pitch with the dog in his arms, as it affectionately tries to lick his face.

The commentator says: "It’s even giving him some kisses, look at that." The dog was then given back to its owners, whilst the match continued, ending in a 0-0 draw.

The Copa Libertadores de América is an annual international club football competition organised by CONMEBOL since 1960. It is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world and the most prestigious club competition in Latin American football.
