Washington State WR Gabe Marks: UCLA 'trying too hard' to be tough
Washington State receiver Gabe Marks does not care for UCLA.
Two days after the Cougars knocked off the Bruins 27-21 at home, Marks, a senior, was asked Monday about UCLA warming up on the Wazzu side of the field before the game.

He didn’t hold back.

“I’m not coming back next year to be able to play them again but I don’t know what their deal is. They kind of come off as bad guys when they do things like that,” Marks said. “I don’t know if they do that to everybody. It’s kind of douchey.”
After that last sentence, Marks looked over toward a WSU staffer, presumably the sports information director, to see if that was an acceptable thing to say. But then he kind of answered the question for himself.
“Don’t cut that,” he said. “Let’s be honest.”
The perceived toughness, or lack thereof, of the UCLA football team under Jim Mora has come up quite a bit in recent years. Marks thinks the Bruins are “trying too hard” to come off as tough.
“It makes you look like you’re trying to be tough because everyone thinks that because you live in Westwood and you wear baby blue you’re not tough,” Marks said. “It makes you look less tough because you’re trying too hard. It’s just weird, you know? You don’t have to do that.”

Marks, who leads the Cougars with 40 receptions, helped his team jump out to a 24-7 lead over UCLA on Saturday night before eventually pulling away with the six-point win. Marks, who grew up in Venice about 10 miles away from the UCLA campus, had 12 catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns in Wazzu’s upset of UCLA last year at the Rose Bowl, including the game-winning score with three seconds to go.
After starting the season 0-2, WSU has reeled off four straight wins and is 3-0 in conference play heading into this weekend’s game at Arizona State.
Meanwhile, UCLA dropped to 3-4 (1-3 Pac-12) on the year.
