The Golden State Warriors were honored as the team of the year, the NHL was selected the league of the year Wednesday at the Sports Business Awards.

The ceremony, which was held in New York, also included the presentation of a lifetime achievement award to Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney. SportsBusiness Journal produces the Sports Business Awards, which are in their seventh year.

The Warriors received the top team honor, beating out five other nominees: the Seattle Seahawks, the Boston Red Sox, the Chicago Blackhawks, the Portland Timbers and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association.

"Being named 'Sports Team of the Year' and recognized for all of the hard work our organization has done this past year is a great honor," Warriors president and chief operating officer Rick Welts said in a statement released by the team. "We have an incredible group of talented and committed employees and are looking forward to continuing to grow as an organization as one of the top franchises in all of sports."

The Warriors sold out every home game this season, and they reported a 30 percent revenue increase. They also bought land in San Francisco with the intention of building a new arena and entertainment complex for a planned future move across the Bay. The team currently plays in Oakland, Calif.

In addition to the NHL's win as the top league, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman was honored as the sports executive of the year. Also, the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic, in which the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout before more than 100,000 fans in Ann Arbor, Mich., was selected as the sports event of the year.

NBC Sports Group became the first entity to sweep the media categories: best in sports media, best in sports television and best in digital sports media.
