Warriors 87, Suns 85

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Carl Landry had 15 of his 17 points in the second half and Brandon Rush had all 14 of his in the first as the Golden State Warriors overcame a cold shooting night from their stars to beat the Suns 87-85 in the season opener for both teams Wednesday night.

Warrior stars Stephen Curry and David Lee combined to miss 26 of 30 shots in the game -- Curry didn't score until hitting a technical foul shot with 10:15 left to play -- and the Warriors gave back most of a 46-29 second quarter lead with a six-kminute scoreless drought before halftime. But Landry gave the Warriors the lead for good at 85-84 with a dunk off a Lee feed with 54 seconds to play and the Suns scored just one point the rest of the way.

Goran Dragic, taking over for Steve Nash on a team with nine new players, led five Suns in double figures with 17 points and added eight assists in front of a sparse crowd announced at 15,678 at US Airways Center. Luis Scola had 15 points and 10 rebounds and PJ Tucker added 10 points off the bench including a run of eight consecutive Phoenix points in the fourth quarter to keep his team in the game.

Curry finished 2 of 14 shooting from the field and missed a pair of free throws with 4.4 seconds left to give the Suns one more chance. But Sebastian Telfair's desperation three-point attempt didn't beat the buzzer.

The Suns had 11 turnovers in the first half leading the 15 Golden State points, but cleaned things up in the third quarter when the Warriors had more turnovers (seven) than field goals (six) and gave back a 10-point lead. Phoenix took their first lead since the first quarter at 63-62 on Marcin Gortat's putback with 2:18 left.

The Warriors didn't get any offensive help from Curry, who signed a four-year, $44 million contract extension earlier in the day but missed all five of his first-half shots. But the rest of the Warriors got were able to build a big lead without him, wiping out an early five-point Suns lead with 21-10 run over the final eight minutes of the quarter.

Klay Thompson had eight first-quarter points for Golden State and center Andrew Bogut, a game-time decision coming back from a fractured left ankle suffered in January, added six and appeared to move well.

A 25-21 Warriors lead quickly swelled thanks to nine of Rush's 14 first-half points and capped a 19-6 Golden State run with a flying slam dunk off a Lee feed with 7:17 left in the half.

But the Warriors scored just four points over the final 6:37 of the half and Suns regrouped with the help of Scola. Scoreless in the first quarter, Scola scored seven consecutive points during a 13-2 Phoenix run, backing up a pair of mid-range jumpers with a three-pointer to pull the Suns back 46-36. Dragic's 12-footer with 5.1 seconds left Phoenix down just six at intermission, 48-42.
