Despite the long layoff, Darrell Wallace Jr. got off to a fast start in practice for the Kroger 250, topping the leaderboard in the first Camping World Truck Series on-track activity since Daytona on Friday morning at Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Va.

Wallace Jr., who picked up his first career win at the short track in 2013, paced the practice with a best speed of 96.662 mph on his 95th of 95 laps. Wallace's late speed edged friend and competitor Ryan Blaney, who finished second with a speed of 96.288.

Timothy Peters (96.239), Erik Jones (96.220) and Ben Kennedy (96.146) rounded out the top five, which featured four drivers 22-years-old or younger.

Reigning series champion Matt Crafton was 10th on the charts with a speed of 95.728.

The caution came out early in practice when the No. 07 of Ray Black Jr. ran out of power and slowed on the track.

The trucks head back out later on Friday for final practice from 3-4:25 p.m. ET (FS1).
