Walker, New Mexico pull away, defeat Idaho 73-58

AP - Sports

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- Demetrius Walker scored eight straight points to spark a game-deciding, second-half run that turned a New Mexico deficit into a victory Friday as the Lobos beat Idaho 73-58.

Walker, who hit all five of his 3-point attempts, finished with 19 points.

Connor Hill scored 20 points to lead Idaho (1-3) and Kyle Barone added 16, but no other Vandal was in double figures.

Alex Kirk contributed 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots for the Lobos (5-0).

New Mexico trailed 47-41 after Barone hit one of his six 3-pointers five minutes into the second half. But Chad Adams responded with a baseline drive, followed by Walker's streak that included two 3-pointers to spark the Lobos.

The Lobos' lead never dropped back into single digits from that point. The Vandals' only points during the stretch came on two Barone foul shots as they missed nine shots and committed four turnovers.

New Mexico led 36-28 late in the first half before a 14-0 Idaho run sandwiched around halftime.

Hill, who was instrumental in the Vandals' strong first half by going 5 of 6 on 3-pointers, hit only one of his six attempts from long range in the second half. As a team, Idaho only managed to make nine of its 29 shots in the second half after going 14 of 27 in the opening 20 minutes.

The Lobos added a strong performance from the line, going 15 of 22. Idaho took only eight foul shots and hit just four of them.
