The voice of the woman Manti Te'o thought was his girlfriend has turned out to be the voice of the man who perpetuated the hoax. The voice of the woman who spent on the phone with the Notre Dame star linebacker is Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the man now identified as the person behind the hoax, his lawyer told the New York Daily News. Milton Grimes told the paper that Tuiasosopo disguised his voice and assumed the identity of Lennay Kekua with the goal of developing a relationship with Te'o. Te'o "thought it was a female he was talking with. It was Ronaiah as Lennay," Grimes said, adding that Tuiasosopo wasn't trying to cause harm to Te'o. "This wasn't a prank to make fun," Grimes told the paper. "It was establishing a communication with someone. ... It was a person with a troubled existence trying to reach out and communicate and have a relationship."
