Vogelsong to oppose Sanchez as Series shifts to Detroit

The SportsXchange

The San Francisco Giants will send right-hander Ryan Vogelsong to the mound Saturday for Game 3 of the World Series in cold Detroit, according to MLB.com.

The Tigers will counter with left-hander Anibal Sanchez. First pitch at Comerica Park is at 8:07 p.m. ET.

Game-time temperatures are expected to be in the low 40s.

"It's the World Series," Vogelsong said. "You can't be worried about how cold it is. I threw a game in Chicago last year where it was 34 degrees, and it was raining and sleeting, and I threw the ball pretty well that night. I don't suspect that cold weather is going to be much of an issue."

The Giants lead of the best-of-7 series 2-0.

"The way I look at it, we're two games back with five to play," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said in a press conference Friday. "But we're playing the team we need to catch, and I think that's the best way to approach it."

The Tigers may have an advantage with the shift to American League rules because they are better-equipped to fill the designated-hitter spot than the Giants. Delmon Young will DH, allowing Detroit to improve its outfield defense with Quentin Berry in left and Andy Dirks in right.

San Francisco's candidates at designated hitter include Hector Sanchez, Aubrey Huff and Joaquin Arias. Another possibility is to DH Pablo Sandoval and move Arias to third base.

Matt Cain of the Giants is lined to oppose the Tigers' Max Scherzer in Game 4 on Sunday.
