Visnovsky still a no-show at Islanders' camp

The SportsXchange

Veteran defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky was not with the New York Islanders for the first day of camp on Sunday and was not expected to attend Monday either, creating a problem for the Islanders.

He was staying away on Monday for "personal reasons," according to ESPN.

Visnovsky is with the KHL's Slovan Bratislava and plans to play in its game in Prague on Tuesday, according to TV NOVA Sport.

He is still under contract with the Islanders, and the team recently booked a flight for him to come back to the United States.

He didn't get on that flight, and has suggested he'd rather play for Slovan Bratislava.

The Islanders could suspend Visnovsky if he refuses to play.

"The KHL has repeatedly said that they will not permit him to play, so I guess we will have to see what happens," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said, according to

However, KHL president Alexander Medvedev made a statement that he will help an NHL player that decides to stay.

The Islanders acquired Visnovsky in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks in the offseason.

Visnovsky had six goals and 21 assists for the Ducks last season.
