Vikings sign DT Joseph, host CB Munnerlyn

Defensive tackle Linval Joseph signed a five-year, $31.5 million deal with the Minnesota Vikings.

Cornerback Captain Munnerlyn was visiting the team and considered likely to sign the seventh-round pick in 2009 who has played his entire NFL career with the Carolina Panthers. Munnerlyn also met with the Washington Redskins.

Joseph, 25, leaves the New York Giants having missed just one game in the past three seasons.

Joseph is a high-energy run stopper who can beat blockers in one-on-one situations. He missed just two starts in the past 48 games (three seasons).

Joseph is expected to be replaced in the Giants' lineup by second-round pick Johnathan Hankins.

He could thrive under new head coach Mike Zimmer, the Vikings' first-year coach who has a strong history of developing defensive linemen, most recently Pro Bowl Bengals' three-technique Geno Atkins.

Joseph signed just as the Vikings were announcing the five-year deal with holdover Everson Griffin was official. Griffen signed a five-year, $42.5 million deal despite not starting a game last season.

He'll work into the pass-rushing rotation with Brian Robison and could replace Jared Allen in the starting lineup. Allen and the Vikings agreed to part ways over the weekend, when the Vikings learned of other teams' interest in Griffen. According to reports, the Denver Broncos were prepared to offer $9 million per season to Griffen, which forced the Vikings to increase their terms.

Another Zimmer pupil, Bengals free agent defensive end Michael Johnson, signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the same terms (five years, $42.5 million).
