The Minnesota Vikings released cornerback A.J. Jefferson on Monday. On Wednesday, the Hennepin County prosecutor charged Jefferson with one count of felony domestic assault by strangulation.

Jefferson, 25, was arrested by the Eden Prairie (Minn.) police department on probable cause for domestic assault before 7 a.m. Monday.

General manager Rick Spielman issued a statement Wednesday.

"The fact that we have had three recent off field situations is unacceptable and disappointing. Our organization looks at each situation and the circumstances involved to determine our actions with those players and how to best move forward," Spielman said.

"The Vikings have a comprehensive approach with our player development program and excellent resources that are a part of this organization, but certainly we will take a methodical look at how we can improve upon our current programs to prevent these situations in the future."

A 23-year-old woman reported that she was assaulted about 4:30 a.m. Jefferson was arrested at his home and booked at Hennepin County Jail, according to police.

Jefferson, in his fourth NFL season, left Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers with a neck injury. He has five tackles and an interception this season.

It is the second time a Vikings player has been arrested this month. Wide receiver Jerome Simpson was arrested on a drunken-driving charge Nov. 9.
