Vikings' new OL transformation shouldn't be difficult

The idea of moving Charlie Johnson to left guard actually happened around Week Three of last season, Vikings OL coach Jeff Davidson said during the draft. Johnson filled in admirably at left tackle after the training-camp release of Bryant McKinnie, their longtime starter at the position. Johnson simply lacked the reach, length and power to play outside, but his short-area quickness should be able to help the fill the void of Steve Hutchinson, who was released this offseason. The reason Johnson is moving, of course, was the drafting of OLT Matt Kalil with the fourth overall pick, and the Vikings see this as a relatively smooth transition given Johnson’s advanced preparation for the move. The other new projected starter on the line, ORG Geoff Schwartz, missed all of last season with an injury, but he is healthy now and comes with Davidson’s stamp of approval as a power player up front from their time together with the Panthers. Even with three starting spots having changed, the Vikings believe their line won’t take long to come together.
