" In boxing to become great more is required of you than in any other sport," said Max Kellerman. Victor Ortiz in his boxing career has not shown the willingness to do whatever it takes in the ring to win. He keeps coming up short in his biggest fights. Therefore, what are Victor Ortiz's top four disappointing fights?
4. LTD 9 Josesito Lopez, June 23rd, 2012
Josesito Lopez was a late replacement for Andre Berto. Ortiz was a heavy favorite against Lopez. And if he beat Lopez then he would get an opportunity to fight Saul Alvarez on September 15th.
Lopez let Ortiz know from the opening bell that he was not intimidated by him. It was an action packed bout and they traded punishing shots throughout the fight.
Ortiz was doing enough in the fight to be ahead on the scorecards. But, he broke his jaw in the fight. Then, after the 9th round his corner tried to persuade him to keep fighting. However, Ortiz decided to quit on his stool.
Ortiz did suffer a legit injury. But, there are boxers that would have kept fighting in that situation. So he lost the battle of wills and he quit.
3. LDQ 1 Corey Alarcon, June 3rd, 2005
Ortiz's fight against Corey Alarcon was only his 8th professional fight. He was a very young boxing prospect trying to make a name for himself in the sport. He was beginning his path to a world title shot.
Ortiz knocked down Alarcon in the 1st round with a hard punch. Later in the round referee David Denkin ordered the fighters to separate from a clinch. Then, he knocked Alarcon down during the break and he stayed down for the count.
The referee ruled it an illegal punch. So Ortiz lost a fight he was clearly winning before he was disqualified. And he made a stupid decision not to wait until the break was over.
2 LKO 4 Floyd Mayweather Jr., September 9th, 2011
Ortiz got the biggest opportunity of his career when Floyd Mayweather Jr. decided to fight him. And he was a big underdog that was trying to shock the world by beating Mayweather.
Mayweather won the first three rounds of the fight by using his superior hand speed, punching accuracy and ring generalship. Then, Ortiz in the 4th round landed a few some good shots as he had Mayweather against the ropes. However, he got wild and threw a flying headbutt at him.
After the referee Joe Cortez took a point away from Ortiz. He said he was sorry and bizarrely kissed Mayweather on the cheek and hugged him. Then, after the fighters touched gloves Mayweather hit Ortiz with a left to the face and a straight right to the jaw that knocked him out.
Mayweather's win over him was controversial. Yet, Ortiz made a dumb mistake because it is a basic rule of all combat sports to protect yourself at all times.
1 LTKO 6 Marcos Maidana, June 27th, 2009
Ortiz in his fight against Marcos Maidana had a chance to become the WBA light welterweight champion. He was on an eight fight knockout streak and he was the favorite against Maidana.
Ortiz started the fight impressively by knocking Maidana down three times in the first two rounds of the fight. And the prizefight was fun to watch as both boxers exchanged powerful punches throughout the fight.
The 6th round Maidana came right at Ortiz hitting him with hard shots. He tried to retreat from Maidana to avoid more punishment. Then Maidana knocked Ortiz down with a left hand to the body and the doctor looked at Ortiz and stopped the fight.
Ortiz in his infamous interview after the bout admitted that he quit during the fight. "I was hurt. I'm not going to lay down for nobody. I'll stop while I'm ahead," said Ortiz.
Ortiz showed in his fight against Maidana that he is not willing to do whatever it takes to win big fights. He folds under pressure.
